Graduate Student Completes GOES Sounder Assimilation Project: Mr. Jordan Gerth, a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, completed his thesis work and graduated with a Masters degree in Atmospheric Science. His thesis is titled "Improving Cloud and Moisture Representation by Assimilating GOES Sounder Products into Numerical Weather Prediction Initial Conditions". He used GOES sounder assimilation software developed by the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Regional Assimilation System (CRAS) group to insert retrievals of three-layer precipitable water and cloud-top pressure into the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model that was configured to mimic real-time regional WRF runs generated by National Weather Service Forecast Offices. His results showed a modest improvement in 12 and 24-hour forecasts for precipitation and clouds. (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071, Robert.Aune@noaa.gov)
