All-Time Record High Temperature at the South Pole: The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station recorded an all-time record high temperature of +9.9º F (-12.3º C) on December 25, 2011. Periods of snowfall also accompanied these record high temperatures. A variety of satellite images and meteorological data from the day of the record-setting event were posted on the Antarctic Meteorological Research Center (AMRC) "On The Ice" blog (http://amrc.ssec.wisc.edu/blog/) and also on the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/9445). Wisconsin Science on a Sphere Wows Nature Center Visitors: The Aldo Leopold Nature Center (ALNC) in Monona, Wisconsin hosted a special exhibit preview day for their new climate change center on 29 December, 2011. A highlight of the public event and their new exhibits is the NOAA Science On a Sphere (SOS), a 6-foot diameter sphere showcasing a multitude of earth science data visualizations. P. Rowley, from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) gave six SOS presentations to over 100 visitors. The presentations included real-time IR satellite imagery, Climate Predication Center (CPC) seasonal forecasts, Arctic Oscillation and La Nina Information, and more. CIMSS and ALNC are working together to create an SOS lecture series for 2012. (P. Rowley, CIMSS, 608-263-1336, S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647, M. Mooney, CIMSS/SSEC, 608-265-2123)

VISITORS:

NSMC Visitor Heads Back to Beijing: For the past year, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) has been fortunate to host a visiting scientist from the National Satellite Meteorological Center (NSMC) in Beijing, China. Dr. Yong Zhang is an expert on satellite calibration and is part of the team in China working with the Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS). Dr. Zhang spent 2011 with CIMSS working on various projects including calibration of the FY-2 series (China's geostationary imagers). He also worked on a surface emissivity retrieval project and plans to continue working on both projects, continuing the collaborative relationship he established with multiple scientists at CIMSS.
