Joint GOES-R Air Quality Proving Ground and EPA Workshop: Brad Pierce attended the GOES-R Air Quality Proving Ground (AQPG) Advisory Group Workshop which focused on a review of the AQPG summer 2011 experiment and plans for next year’s AQPG experiment. The AQPG summer 2011 experiment was held during the NASA “Deriving Information on Surface Conditions from Column and Vertically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality” (DISCOVER-AQ) field mission (http://discover-aq.larc.nasa.gov/) which provided detailed airborne and ground-based measurements for validating the proxy GOES-R ABI Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) retrievals used for the AQPG demonstration. The AQPG workshop was held jointly with the Second Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Working Group on Satellite and Above-Boundary Layer Observations for Air Quality Management Workshop. This EPA workshop focused on the use of satellite data for Exceptional Events Analysis and was intended to help provide feedback to United States Group on Earth Observations (USGEO) to help reach the goal of an Integrated Earth Observing System (IEOS), contributing to the Global Earth Observing System of Systems (GEOSS) Societal Benefit Areas of Health, Climate, and Energy. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

AVHRR Polar Pathfinder to be Produced at CIMSS: After discussions with the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC, Boulder, CO), Yinghui Liu (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies), Xuanji Wang (CIMSS), and Jeff Key (Advanced Satellite Products Branch) agreed to begin producing and providing to NSIDC the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Polar Pathfinder (APP) dataset. APP is a 5 km, twice daily, Arctic and Antarctic composite of AVHRR channel information (reflectances and brightness temperatures), viewing and illumination geometry, a cloud mask, surface temperature and albedo, and a surface type mask. The project began at the University of Colorado (CU) in the 1990's, but with the uncertainty in future funding for the CU group, CIMSS/ASPB agreed to become the provider. APP has been used by Wang, Liu, and Key in the production of the extended APP product, or APP-x, for many years. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu; Y. Liu, CIMSS, 608-265-8620; X.
