ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING FEBRUARY 25, 2012

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Paper Published in Nature Climate Change: The paper “Tropical cyclones: Global trends in human exposure, vulnerability and risk” was published online in Nature Climate Change on 12 February 2012. The paper, which is a product of an ongoing collaboration between J. Kossin (NCDC/RSAD) and scientists at United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Geneva, Switzerland, introduces a new model that mitigates heterogeneity issues with existing global risk datasets. The model was applied to trend analyses associated with tropical cyclone risk. Trends in exposure are largely demographically driven and offset projected 21st century declines in global tropical cyclone frequency. (J. Kossin, NCDC/RSAD, 608-265-5356)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Conference on Indian Ocean cyclones: Jim Kossin (NCDC/RSAD) attended the Second International Conference on Indian Ocean Tropical Cyclones and Climate Change (IOTCCC-2012) held in New Delhi, 14-17 February 2012. Kossin attended by invitation as a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Expert Team on Tropical Cyclones and Climate Change. He gave a plenary talk entitled “Objective Satellite Reanalysis of Indian Ocean Tropical Cyclone Intensity”, which showed new results of a collaborative effort between NCDC/RSAD scientists (J. Kossin and K. Knapp) and scientists at CIMSS (T. Olander). (J. Kossin, NCDC/RSAD, 608-265-5356, T. Olander, CIMSS, 608-265-8005)

Eleventh International Winds Workshop: The Eleventh International Winds Workshop (IWW) was held in Auckland, New Zealand, February 20-24, 2012. It was hosted by the University of Auckland. The IWWs are an ideal forum for interacting with the numerical weather prediction (NWP) community on product developments, forecast impacts, and problems. Scientists from the international satellite and numerical weather prediction communities participated in the workshop, with representatives from (but not limited to) the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Japan, Korea, China, India, Australia, and New Zealand. NOAA personnel in attendance included J. Key and J. Daniels (co-chair); participating Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists included C. Velden, D. Santek, S. Wanzong, and J. Jung. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov)
