ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING APRIL 28, 2012

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Manuscript on Sounding Applications in Preconvection Environment Published: A manuscript titled "Applications of Full Spatial Resolution Space-Based Advanced Infrared Soundings in the Preconvection Environment" has been published in Weather and Forecasting. Co-authors are Jun Li, Chian-Yi Liu (CIMSS), Peng Zhang (CMA) and Tim Schmit (STAR). (Jun Li, Jun.Li@ssec.wisc.edu, 608-262-3755)

Paper Published on Predicting Hurricane Intensity: The article “Predicting Hurricane Intensity and Structure Changes Associated with Eyewall Replacement Cycles” by Jim Kossin (NCDC/RSAD) and Matt Sitkowski (CIMSS/AOS) appears this month in Weather and Forecasting. The paper introduces new operational forecasting tools based on an extensive climatology constructed using a combination of microwave and geostationary infrared satellite data, aircraft data, and model analysis data. The new tools provide skillful predictions of the intensity and wind structure changes associated with hurricane eyewall replacement cycles, and will be transitioned to operational testing at the National Hurricane Center. This work is supported by the NOAA Joint Hurricane Testbed project. (J. Kossin, NCDC/RSAD, 608-265-5356)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

IPCC Meeting Attended: Jim Kossin (NCDC/RSAD) attended the 3rd Lead Authors Meeting of the IPCC AR5, held in Marrakech, Morocco on 16-20 April. Strategies to address the comments from the open review of the First Order Draft were defined, and required tasks and deadlines for crafting the Second Order Draft were established. Kossin is a Lead Author on Chapter 14 (Climate Phenomena and their Relevance for Future Regional Climate Change) and a Contributing Author on Chapter 2 (Observations: Atmosphere and Surface) and Chapter 10 (Detection and Attribution of Climate Change: from Global to Regional). (J. Kossin, NCDC/RSAD, 608-265-5356)

Aerosol Proposal Review for the U.S. Department of State: Brad Pierce reviewed an aerosol and trace gas research proposal for the Science Center programs of the U.S. Department of State. The Science Centers, which include the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) in Moscow and the Science and Technology Center in Ukraine (STCU) were established in 1994 and 1995 as nonproliferation programs, with the primary objective of providing peaceful, non-weapons opportunities to weapons scientists in the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union. (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)

CIMSS Readying for AWIPS “II” Deployment: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) continues to make strides preparing for the operational deployment of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) “II”. CIMSS has provided experimental, research-grade satellite imagery and products to National Weather Service (NWS) operations for use in the legacy AWIPS software since June 2006. The switch to AWIPS “II” requires a redevelopment of the delivery format and display mechanisms for nearly all CIMSS satellite products. On April 19 and 20, 2012, Jordan Gerth visited the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, Oklahoma, to prepare for the Hazardous Weather Testbed this summer, where AWIPS “II” will be used when NWS forecasters evaluate products demonstrated as part of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series (GOES-R) Proving Ground. CIMSS has been working closely with the NWS since 2008 to assure there is not a gap in the delivery of CIMSS’ satellite products as offices migrate to the new version of AWIPS. (J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942)

AMS Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology Conference: The 30th Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology sponsored by the American Meteorological Society was held April 15-20 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The meeting was well attended by scientists from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, with nearly 20 papers presented. A couple members also served as session chairs. (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)

International Polar Year Conference: Xuanji Wang (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS), Yinghui Liu (CIMSS), and Jeff Key (STAR) attended the "2012 International Polar Year (IPY) Conference: From Knowledge to Action" in Montreal, 23-27 April 2012. The conference brought international attention to the polar regions, global change, and related environmental, social and economic issues. There were over 2,000 Arctic and Antarctic researchers, policy- and decision-makers, and a broad range of interested parties from academia, industry, non-government, education and circumpolar communities. Wang, Liu, and Key gave oral and poster presentations and attended a variety of side meetings with colleagues from around the world. More information is available at http://www.ipy2012montreal.ca.  (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
