ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING MAY 5, 2012

IN THE PRESS:

Article on Hyperspectral Sounding: In an article on hyperspectral sounding by reporter Laura Peterson, Greenwire, T. Schmit was quoted on the potential of advanced geostationary soundings. The article is available at http://www.eenews.net/public/Greenwire/2012/04/27/2. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Conferences: Tri-Agency Climate Change and AGU Science Policy: NOAA, NASA and NSF co-convened a conference for Climate Change Education (CCE) April 17-20, 2012 in Arlington Virginia to foster synergy between nearly 200 individuals representing projects funded by NSF Climate Change Education Partnership programs, NASA Global Climate Change Education programs, and several NOAA Environmental Literacy initiatives including Science on a Sphere (SOS) (https://nice.larc.nasa.gov/tri_pi/?page_id=352). The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) had a strong showing at this gathering. Two weeks later on April 30, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) held its inaugural Science Policy meeting in Washington DC, a smaller meeting with one poster presentation from CIMSS. Along with the similar location and solid Wisconsin participation, Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) visualization tools provided another common thread at these events with McIDAS-V playing a prominent role at breakout sessions during the tri-agency meeting and Vis5D animations exemplifying ways that science can inform policy at the AGU meeting. ASPB and CIMSS in NOAA Science Week: The STAR Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) played key roles in the NOAA Satellite Science Week meeting that was held April 30 - May 4 at the National Weather Service (NWS) Training Center in Kansas City, MO. CIMSS and ASPB scientists gave 11 presentations on imagery, soundings, clouds, volcanic clouds and the cyrosphere, were lead authors on at least 17 posters, and were part of the organizing committee. The objectives of the meeting were to stimulate scientific advancements for operations, to understand and assess NWS operational experiences with GOES-R and JPSS Products in the Proving Ground, to promote training and discuss collaboration on developing training, and to explore potential among NOAA observing system programs. The presentations will be available at http://www.goes-r.gov/users/conf-mtgs.html. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu; T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; R.
