PATMOS-x Cloud Detection Paper Published: A manuscript titled "A naive Bayesian cloud-detection scheme derived from CALIPSO and applied within PATMOS-x", by A. Heidinger, A. Evan, M. Foster, and A. Walther, has been published in the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology (JAMC) (vol 51, no 6). The paper describes the cloud detection scheme used in the latest version of Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data set. The cloud detection scheme was based on a naive Bayesian approach that was trained using space-borne lidar data. This scheme was used to generate the three decades of PATMOS-x data available from the NOAA National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, M. Foster, CIMSS, 608-261-1361)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

20th CIMSS Student Workshop: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) held the 20th CIMSS Student Workshop on Atmospheric, Satellite, and Earth Sciences on the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) campus from 24 to 28 June 2012, for eight science-oriented high school students. Numerous CIMSS and UW staff presented a variety of talks, demonstrations, and activity sessions for the students on topics of meteorology and forecasting (including satellite applications), geology, earth remote sensing, and astronomy. Fields trips included visits to a major local television station, a major local private vendor and developer of meteorological products and displays, the Aldo Leopold Nature Center, the  National Weather Service (NWS) office in Sullivan, WI, the UW Geology Museum, the UW Washburn Observatory, and a particularly geologically interesting state park (Devil’s Lake). The Man-computer Interactive Data Access System (McIDAS)-V was explained, demonstrated, and used by the students to analyze and discuss meteorological data. Students presented mini-case studies after working closely on McIDAS-V, one-on-one, with UW/CIMSS scientists. For more details see http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/studentworkshop/. (C. CIMSS VISIT Activities: S. Lindstrom and S. Bachmeier participated in the Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) Satellite Chat session on "Mesoscale Convective Vortices", which was conducted on June 27, 2012. Staff from a number of National Weather Service forecast offices sat in on this new format of brief, informal, and interactive VISIT training activities. In addition, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/) was updated with new posts covering topics such as Tropical Storm Debby, oil drilling activity in the Eagle Ford (Texas) and Bakken (North Dakota) oil shale formations, western US wildfires, and a strong derecho wind event moving southeastward through the Ohio Valley region. Presentation to the GOES-R Calibration Working Group: On June 29, 2012, T. Schmit, along with H. Bysal of the Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO), remotely gave the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Calibration Working Group (CWG) a presentation on the recent GOES-12 Imager electronics side switch.
