Paper on Greenland Surface Temperature Published: A paper on two satellite-derived surface temperature records of the Greenland ice sheet was published in the Journal of Climate. The paper, titled "A Satellite-Derived Climate-Quality Data Record of the Clear-Sky Surface Temperature of the Greenland Ice Sheet", was co-authored by D. Hall, J. Comiso, N. DiGirolamo, C. Shuman, J. Key, and L. Koenig (J. Climate, 25, 4785-4798, doi:10.1175/JCLI-D-11-00365.1). (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

Grandparents University at UW - Meteorology Major: University of Wisconsin (UW)-Madison alumni and their grandchildren spent two days at the Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences (AOSS) building attending "Grandparents University" this July, a novel program developed at the UW-Madison that serves as a pipeline for students interested in science as well as a venue to showcase the university, and its research. And AOSS did not disappoint. Meteorology activities were led by Patrick Rowley, Jean Phillips, Gary S. Wade, Kaba Bah, Erik Olson, Lee Wellhouse, Joey Snarski, and Margaret Mooney. (Yes, it takes a village!) Support for this short but powerful experience was provided by AOS (UW Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences), AMRC (UW Antarctic Meteorological Research Center), NOAA/NESDIS/STAR, CIMSS (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies), and SSEC (UW Space Science and Engineering Center). Even Ball Aerospace contributed this year by shipping models of the new Suomi NPP (National Polar-orbiting Partnership) Satellite for assembly! NOAA CDR Meeting: Andrew Heidinger gave a presentation remotely at a meeting of the NOAA Climate Data Record (CDR) Program held at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, North Carolina. The presentation focused on the delivery of daily updates of the PATMOS-x climate data records to NCDC and implementation of PATMOS-x processing at NCDC. The Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x) data record spans from 1978 to the present. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, Andrew.Heidinger@noaa.gov)

CIMSS VISIT Activities: S. Lindstrom led the Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) lessons "Convective Cloud-Top Cooling Rate and the University of Wisconsin Convective Initiation Products" and "Objective Satellite-Based Overshooting Top and Enhanced-V Anvil Thermal Couplet Signature Detection" on July 31, 2012, with forecasters from the National Weather Service Forecast Office at Eureka, California participating in the training. In addition, S. Lindstrom and S. Bachmeier participated in a "VISIT Satellite Chat" training session on August 1, 2012, which highlighted the Southwest US monsoon pattern and a recent derecho event. Staff from a number of National Weather Service forecast offices sat in on this new format of brief, informal, and interactive VISIT training activities. (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608-263-4425, S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)
