IRS Meeting: Andrew Heidinger gave an oral presentation at the International Radiation Symposium (IRS) held last week in Berlin, Germany. The subject of his talk was the observed variability of several satellite climate records over North America. The material for presentation was taken from a book chapter written by several STAR scientists and edited by George Ohring. Heidinger also attend a meeting of the International Radiation Commission (IRC) and was nominated to be the rapporteur to the GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Experiment) Radiation Panel. (A. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

NSSL Scientist Teaches Barrow Students About Weather: Bob Rabin, a NOAA National Severe Storms Lab scientist who is often at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, participated in two Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses held on the campus of the Ilisagvik College in Barrow, Alaska. (Ilisagvik means “A place to Learn” in the Inupiaq language). Attendees were North Slope Alaska Native students from Barrow and other smaller villages. The first course, for students grades 10 and up, was titled “Understanding Our Climate, Science in Cultural Context: Changing Permafrost on the North Slope”, designed for students to explore various disciplines addressing climate change. During the second course, Rabin presented a full day of activities in Barrow that included satellite basics, observations, and weather forecasting for grades 7-9. The students then participated in a contest based on their forecasts of temperature, pressure and wind for the following few days. Tours and hands-on activities were provided at the National Weather Service Weather Office in Barrow and at the ESRL/Global Monitoring Division observatory. (R. Manuscript Submitted to 4th IUAPPA International Symposium: A manuscript entitled “Quantification of Saharan Dust on Anatolian Peninsula via RAQMS Modeling” by Burcu Kabatas, Alper Unal, R. Bradley Pierce, and Tayfun Kındap was submitted to the 4th International Symposium and IUAPPA Regional Conference: Air Quality Management at Urban, Regional and Global Scales (http://aqm2012.itu.edu.tr/). This manuscript discusses the use of the Realtime Air Quality Modeling System (RAQMS) aerosol analyses to understand the long-range transport of Saharan dust that was responsible for high coarse mode (>10 microns) Particulate Matter (PM10) measurements at surface monitoring sites during April 2008 in Turkey. The International Union of Air Pollution Prevention and Environmental Protection Associations (IUAPPA) goal is to help develop and promote solutions to regional and global air pollution that involve linkages between air pollution and other social, economic and environmental issues. It brings together governmental and non-governmental organizations to help develop more effective air pollution control policies (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)
