ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING AUGUST 18, 2012

IN THE PRESS:

Sun Sentinel Article on GOES-R and Hurricanes: An article appeared in the Sun Sentinel (Florida) on how the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) will improve hurricane monitoring and forecasts. Several NOAA employees were quoted, including Jack Beven, John Leslie and Tim Schmit. The story, titled "New weather satellites to boost hurricane forecasts", can be found at http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/weather/hurricane/fl-new-weather-satellites-20120810,0,7356182.story. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, Timothy.J.Schmit@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Paper Published on Seasonal Hurricane Forecasts: A paper has been published in the journal Weather, Climate, and Society (v4, pp110-117) that uses model-generated synthetic tracks of Atlantic hurricanes and a portfolio of risk from the re-insurance sector to examine the potential economic utility of seasonal hurricane forecasts. Emanuel, K., F. Fondriest, and J. Kossin, 2012: Potential economic value of seasonal hurricane forecasts. (J. Kossin, NCDC/RSAD, 608-265-5356)

SSEC Assists in Installation of Hawaii X/L Band Polar Reception Antenna: The Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) provided end-to-end installation support for new X/L band antenna capable of receiving data from Terra, Aqua, NPP, NOAA-18, NOAA-19, Metop-A, and Fengyun 3B satellites with priority given in the order listed. The Honolulu National Weather Service forecast office is very pleased with the access to Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) data, including the day-night band. Additional polar orbiting decision support products will be made available to Pacific region within the next year including volcanic ash and sulfur dioxide detection capability. (L. Gumley, SSEC, 608-265-5358, W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283, K. Strabala, SSEC, J. Gerth CIMSS)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Special 1-min GOES-14 Imager Scans: Special 1-minute Super Rapid Scan Operations for GOES-R (SRSOR) began on August 16, while the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-14 is out of storage. This is a unique opportunity to combine rapid scan imagery with other data such as radar. More information can be found at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/srsor/GOES-14_SRSOR.html. Sample loops are at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/VIS_IR4_16Augloop.gif and http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/VIS_IR4_17Augloop.gif. GOES-14 will be collecting data through October. These rapid scan images (often 26 images in 30-minutes) are taken more often than what is possible with currently operational satellites. (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS; T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; Steve Goodman, GOES-R Project Office)

Second Order Draft of the IPCC AR5 Submitted: The Second Order Draft (SOD) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) was submitted for its second public/peer review on 8/10. The SOD reflects revisions based on the first public/peer review in Dec 2011 to Feb 2012. Jim Kossin (NCDC/RSAD) serves as a Lead Author on Chapter 14 (Regional Climate Change) and a Contributing Author on Chapters 2 (Observations) and 10 (Detection & Attribution). (J. Kossin, NCDC/RSAD, 608-265-5356)
