NOAA Deputy Administrator Visits CIMSS: Dr. Kathryn Sullivan visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on 8 October 2012. She was in Madison to deliver a keynote address at the annual National Weather Association annual meeting. Dr. Sullivan is the assistant secretary of commerce for environmental observation and prediction and deputy administrator for NOAA. She is also performing the duties of NOAA’s chief scientist. Dr. Sullivan was one of the first six women selected to join the NASA astronaut corps in 1978 and holds the distinction of being the first American woman to walk in space (October 11, 1984). (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu; S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647; J. Gerth, CIMSS)

CIMSS Hosts the NWA Annual Meeting in Madison: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) hosted the 37th Annual Meeting of the National Weather Association (NWA) in Madison, WI, 7-11 October 2012. Held at the Monona Terrace, over 400 operational weather experts and enthusiasts participated in a full agenda arranged and orchestrated by the local NWA organizing committee (Jordan Gerth, CIMSS, L. Cronce, CIMSS, and G. S. Wade, NESDIS), along with many other volunteers from CIMSS, the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), the UW Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, and the local Milwaukee-Sullivan NOAA/National Weather Service (NWS) Forecast Office. Although a significant number of NWS forecasters were denied travel at the last moment, quick action over the weekend to arrange remote presentations mitigated some of the loss. Nonetheless, those remote presenters did not participate in the rest of the meeting, and thus the goal of connecting researchers and developers with the operational users was not fully accomplished. For meeting details, see http://www.nwas.org/meetings/nwa2012/. (J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942, jordang@ssec.wisc.edu; L. Cronce, CIMSS, 608-265-6282; G. S. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

JCSDA 10th Workshop on Satellite Data Assimilation: J. Otkin, T. Greenwald, J. Jung, J. Lalande, A. Lenzen, J. Li, S. Nolin, D. Santek, and J. Stroik attended the 10th Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) Workshop on Satellite Data Assimilation in College Park, MD. Presentations were given describing results from data denial experiments, improvements to the CRTM, S4 science support, and the impact of atmospheric motion vectors and sounding retrievals on forecast performance. Brad Pierce (NESDIS) gave a talk via Webex on ozone assimilation. Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) technical computing scientists manned a booth describing the S4 supercomputer and interacted with current and potential users of the system. (J. Otkin, CIMSS, 608-265-2476; R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)

National Climate Assessment Report Published: The “Coastal Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerabilities” technical inputs report has been completed and forwarded to the United States Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) for distribution. Jim Kossin (NCDC/RSAD) served as a Lead Author on Chapter 2: Williams, S. J., D. Atkinson, A. R. Byrd, H. Eicken, T. M. Hall, T. G. Huntington, Y. Kim, T. R. Knutson, J. P. Kossin, M. Lilly, J. J. Marra, J. Obeysekera, A. Parris, J. Ratcliff, T. Ravens, D. Resio, P. Ruggiero, E. R. Thieler, J. G. Titus, T. V. Wamsley, 2012: Physical climate forces. In: Coastal Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability: A Technical Input to the 2012 National Climate Assessment [Burkett, V.R. and Davidson, M.A. (eds.)]. Cooperative Report to the 2013 National Climate Assessment, pp. 150. (J. Kossin, NCDC/RSAD, 608-265-5356)

Diagnosing GOES-13 Imager and Sounder Data: In continuing support of efforts to possibly return Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-13 Imager and Sounder to service, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) scientists investigated the quality of the data. Sample brightness temperature and derived product images from the sounder can be found at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/rt/sounder-dpi.php. For a 24-hour test period, GOES-13 GOES Variable (GVAR) was relayed off GOES-14. The data were captured by the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) Data Center. (J. Nelson, CIMSS, 608-263-6013, S. Wanzong, CIMSS, 608-263-1950, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov).

ASPB supports the NWA Annual Meeting in Madison: In support of the 37th Annual Meeting of the National Weather Association (NWA) in Madison, WI on 7-11 October 2012, the NOAA/NESDIS Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) participated in the planning and execution of the NWA meeting. R. Aune, T. Schmit, and G. S. Wade, as members of the local NWA chapter and organizing committee, reviewed abstracts, served as sessions chairs, worked on various aspects of arranging for speakers and setting the agenda, as well as, participated by their presentation of their scientific work. T. Schmit gave a talk on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and also gave (during the student session) a talk on government career opportunities, while G. S. Wade presented a poster on current GOES Sounder products and usage. R. Aune was a co-author on R. Petersen’s talk on the GOES Nearcast as well as a co-author on graduate student W. Line’s poster on improvements to the GOES Nearcast (which was selected Best Student Poster). (G. S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743, gary.s.wade@noaa.gov; T.
