Briefing on Global Cryosphere Watch to Arctic Policy Group: Jeff Key gave a presentation to the U.S. Arctic Policy Group (APG) on the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) on 29 November 2012. The APG is a federal inter-agency working group, chaired by the Department of State, comprising those agencies with involvement in research and monitoring, land and natural resources management, environmental protection, human health, transportation and policy making in the Arctic. The APG meets monthly to develop and implement programs and policies in the Arctic, including those relevant to the activities of the Arctic Council. The presentation on GCW was intended to (1) make all U.S. agencies with Arctic interests aware of the program and solicit participation, and (2) propose that GCW be included in the U.S. plans for its chairmanship of the Arctic Council starting in 2015. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

NASA Air Quality Applied Sciences Team 4th Meeting (AQAST 4): Brad Pierce presented a talk entitled “Nested RAQMS/WRF-CHEM simulations of stratospheric influence on surface ozone during CalNex” and chaired a session on “Serving Air Quality Management Needs” at the 4th biannual NASA Air Quality Applied Sciences Team Meeting (AQAST 4, http://acmg.seas.harvard.edu/aqast/index.html), November 29-30, 2012 in Sacramento, CA. AQAST 4 was hosted by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and focused on air quality issues in California and the Western U.S. (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Release of Hyper-Spectral Retrieval Package (for CrIS, AIRS, IASI): A retrieval package to process hyper-spectral radiance measurements from the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) has been released under the Community Satellite Processing Package (CSPP) to the science community on 28 November 2012. The software package can be downloaded from http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/cspp/uwhsrtv_edr_v1.0.shtml. This multi-instrument/platform retrieval algorithm is based on the dual-regression method, developed by Elisabeth Weisz and William L. Smith Sr., Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), for use with either CrIS, AIRS or IASI radiance measurements. It retrieves a suite of surface, cloud and atmospheric parameters at single field-of-view resolution. (Elisabeth Weisz, CIMSS, 608-265-3954)
