AVHRR Polar Pathfinder Near Real-Time Processing: The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Polar Pathfinder (APP) product is now being generated in near real-time at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). APP is a 5-km, twice daily composite of AVHRR data for both polar regions. It is used by the science community and is the critical first step in the generation of the CIMSS/ASPB extended APP (APP-x) suite, which includes cloud, surface, and radiation properties. The APP project was started in the early 1990s at the University of Colorado-Boulder with funding from NASA. It was updated infrequently, so CIMSS took over the processing in order to keep it up to date. It will be distributed by the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC, Boulder). (Y.
