Satellite Images of Storm Responsible for the Grounding of the Kulluk Oil Rig Off Alaska: Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-15) and Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) images of the strong storm system that was responsible for the grounding of the Shell Kulluk oil drilling rig off the coast of Alaska on December 31, 2012 were posted on the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/12078). GOES-15 water vapor channel images revealed the distinct signature of an intensifying, occluding low pressure system as it moved northward in the Gulf of Alaska. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)
