CIMSS Responds to ABI Pre-Waiver Request: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) responded to a request from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Program Office concerning a potential issue facing the 12.3 micrometer band (band 15) on the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). The GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) GOES-R Analysis Facility for Instrument Impacts on Requirements (GRAFIIR) team responded by altering previously generated GOES-R AWG ABI Proxy data with the instrument effect in the band 15 radiances and generating cloud and soundings algorithm products. The altered products were compared to products generated with unaltered data. The output for the cloud algorithms can be seen at http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/grafiir/GOES_ABI/12.3um/Cloud_StripingNoise135/. The GRAFIIR team provided a description of the instrument deviation, how it was simulated in proxy data, and an analysis of the results of the product comparisons to the GOES-R Senior Scientist and others. AMS Annual Meetings: The American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting was held in Austin, Texas January 6-10, 2013. Tim Schmit attended and served as a co-chair of the Future Operational Environmental Satellite Systems symposium, a session and poster co-chair, gave two oral presentations related to the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R, and participated in a number of side meetings. In addition, satellite animations were built and shown before the Hurricane Sandy townhall and in the NOAA booth. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)
