IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

U.S. Arctic Strategy Review Team: The White House National Security Staff (NSS) office is the overall lead on U.S. arctic policy. NSS is creating a multi-agency, ad hoc team to review the strategy. Jeff Key and Pablo Clemente-Colón (STAR) will review sections relevant to NOAA's satellite programs. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

3rd IASI Conference: The 3rd IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) Conference, organized by EUMETSAT (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) and CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales), was held in Hyeres, France in 4 - 8 February 2013. The conference addressed the following topics: IASI instruments and ground segment status; IASI science and applications; and agencies programs for meteorology, climate and atmospheric composition (IASI NG and other instruments). The Space Science and Engineering Center had a number of participants. Hank Revercomb was a member of the Conference Scientific Committee but was unable to attend the meeting. Robert Knuteson chaired the Surface Applications session. David Tobin, Allen Huang, Jacola Roman, Fred Best, and Joe Taylor also attended. The group presented material related to work with the Suomi NPP Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), and next generation infrared technology: " Using GPS radio Occultation from COSMIC and METOP in the validation of IR soundings from IASI, AIRS and CrIS" (Knuteson), "Results of calibration/validation efforts for the cross-track Infrared Sounder on Suomi-NPP" (Tobin), "Geo-Hyperspectral Infrared Imaging Sounder – flash floods simulation and assimilation Study" (Huang), "On-Orbit Absolute Radiance Standard for the Next Generation of IR Remote Sensing Instruments" (Best), "Analysis of Suomi NPP Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) Onboard Digital Filtering and Decimation" (Taylor), "Precipitable Water Vapor from IASI, AIRS, and CrIS for Detecting Extreme Weather Events and Climate Change" (Roman). Jacola Roman received the award for best poster presentation. (D. Tobin, CIMSS, H. Revercomb, CIMSS/SSEC, R. Knuteson, CIMSS, F. Best SSEC, J. Taylor, SSEC, J. Roman, CIMSS, A. Huang, CIMSS)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

CIMSS VISIT Activities: S. Lindstrom participated in two Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) Satellite Chat sessions (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/training/visit/satellite_chat/) on February 13. In addition, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/) was updated with the posts "Satellite View of Meteor Vapor Trail Over Russia", "Bennett Island Cloud Plume", and "Kelvin-Helmholtz billows: a satellite signature of turbulence potential?". (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 263-4425, S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Manuscript on Space-based Doppler Wind Lidar submitted to BAMS: A manuscript entitled “Lidar-Measured Wind Profiles – The Missing Link in the Global Observing System” by W. E. Baker, R. Atlas, C. Cardinali, A. Clement, G. D. Emmitt, B. M. Gentry, M. Hardesty, E. Kallen, M. J. Kavaya, R. Langland, M. Matsutani, W. McCarty, R. B. Pierce, Z. Pu, L. P. Rissshojgaard, J. Ryan, S. Tucker, M. Weissmann, and J. G. Yoe was submitted to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS). The manuscript reviews the expected impact of global Doppler Wind Lidar (DWL) measurements on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and climate research, DWL measurement concepts, and the recent advances in technology that will set the stage for space-based deployment (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)
