Improved GOES Sounder Retrieval Algorithm Becomes Operational: On 25 Feb 2013, the NESDIS Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO) will begin operational production of an improved Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounder retrieval algorithm. Derived Product Imagery (DPI) and vertical profiles from the new “Li et al, 2008” algorithm will be distributed through the National Weather Service (NWS) Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) and be available to all NWS forecast offices. Concurrent system hardware upgrades at OSPO for the sounding retrieval processing will noticeably reduce product latency. This research-to-operations process, and accompanying product quality evaluation, were accomplished by a collaborative effort among several organizations: the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) for algorithm development, assessment, and initial implementation; the NESDIS Center for SaTellite Applications and Research (STAR) and NESDIS OSPO for implementation within the operational environment; and the Office of Atmospheric Research (OAR) Earth Systems Research Laboratory (ESRL) for assessment with Global Positioning System (GPS)-Met co-located measurements.
