Rick Kohrs a winner in UW’s 2013 Cool Science Image Contest: Rick Kohrs is one of the winners in the University of Wisconsin's 2013 Cool Science Image Contest. The image he made is a composite of several satellite observations on October 28, 2012 and includes observations from various water vapor channel and sea surface temperature. For information is available at http://www.news.wisc.edu/slideshows/coolscience2013/4. (S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647)

Figure caption: This image from October 28, 2012 shows the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere and the sea surface temperature. Super storm Sandy can be seen off the East coast of the United States as she strengthened due to the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. Moist air rises over warm water, seen in orange and red, and provides the fuel necessary to strengthen tropical storms. As storms pass over colder waters, seen in blues and greens, tropical storms begin to weaken due to the lack of energy-laden moist air rising from the sea surface. Rick Kohrs, staff, Space Science and Engineering Center

CIMSS participates in UW Day at the Wisconsin State Capitol: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) organized and staffed a booth at the first annual UW (University of Wisconsin) Day at the State Capitol on April 4, 2013 to showcase some of the science that takes place at the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Science building where CIMSS is housed. Along with discussions with a dozen or so legislators, more than a hundred students and private citizens stopped by the booth during the four hour event. Even Bucky Badger, the Wisconsin mascot, stopped by! While the tried and true CIMSS weather applets and new EarthNow products (http://sphere.ssec.wisc.edu/) were very popular with visitors, genuine amazement was sparked during discussions around the poster take-away depicting Hurricane Sandy merging with a cold front captured under moonlight by the VIIRS (visible infrared imager radiometer suite) instrument on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite. CIMSS VISIT Activities: S. Lindstrom led the Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) lesson "Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Fog/Low Stratus (FLS) products" on April 2, with staff from the National Weather Service forecast office at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania participating in the training. In addition, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog) was updated with posts on the following topics: "53rd anniversary of the first image from a meteorological satellite", "The Bakken oil shale region: at night, and during the day", "Mesoscale Convective System in the Gulf of Mexico", and "Mesospheric airglow waves". (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 263-4425, S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)

JPSS Annual Product Review Meeting: The JPSS VIIRS (visible infrared imager radiometer suite) Cryosphere Team participated in the JPSS Annual Program Environmental Data Record (EDR) Review on 26 March 2013. J. Key presented the team’s accomplishments, issues, level of effort, and budget. Other teams that participated included Aerosols, Sea Surface Temperature, Ocean Color, Land, Sounding, and Ozone. (J.
