Presentation at Family Science Night: Tom Whittaker brought along a sampling of the education applets for the students and parents at Van Hise Elementary School, Madison, WI, to experiment and interact with during the Family Science Night at the school. (T. Whittaker, 608-262-2759, CIMSS)

NOAA Satellite Conference: The 2013 NOAA Satellite Conference (NSC) was held April 8-12, 2013 in College Park, MD. The theme was “Strengthening Partnerships to Enhance User Readiness, Reception, and Utility”. STAR's Advanced Satellite Products Branch supported the NSC through participation on the poster and agenda committees, oral presentations on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES)-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and on volcanic ash, and posters on a variety of topics. Kathy Strabala, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), gave a presentation on direct broadcast software. T. Schmit and A. Heidinger also gave oral presentations at the Global Space-Based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS) workshop that was held Monday morning. CIMSS VISIT Activities: S. Lindstrom led the Virtual Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (VISIT) lessons "Convective Cloud-Top Cooling and University of Wisconsin Convective Initiation" and "Objective Satellite-Based Overshooting Top and Enhanced-V Anvil Thermal Couplet Signature Detection" on April 9, 2013. Forecasters from the National Weather Service forecast offices in Buffalo, New York and Honolulu, Hawaii participated in the VISIT lessons. In addition, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog was updated with a post discussing the record-breaking snowfall event in Rapid City, South Dakota during the April 8-10, 2013 period (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/12666).
