ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING APRIL 27, 2013

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Metop-B AVHRR Polar Winds Go Operational: The Metop-B Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) polar winds product became operational in NESDIS on 23 April 2013. The Metop-B polar winds join the currently operational polar winds from Metop-A AVHRR, NOAA satellite AVHRR, and Terra and Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu; D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410; C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168; R. Dworak, CIMSS, 608-265-8620)

Manuscript on Volcanic Ash and Dust Retrievals Published: A manuscript entitled “Automated retrievals of volcanic ash and dust cloud properties from upwelling infrared measurements” has been published in the Journal of Geophysical Research. The article, which is co-authored by Michael Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS/STAR), Andrew Heidinger (NOAA/NESDIS/STAR), and Justin Sieglaff (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies), describes the ash/dust cloud retrieval algorithm developed by the next generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) Algorithm Working Group (AWG). The article is available online at: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jgrd.50173/abstract (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov, A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov, J. Sieglaff, CIMSS)

Environment Canada Workshop on Satellite Applications for Arctic Weather: Michael Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS/STAR) and Andrew Heidinger (NOAA/NESDIS/STAR) remotely participated in the Satellite Applications for Arctic Weather and Search and Rescue Operations (SAAWSO) workshop hosted by Environment Canada April 22-24, 2013 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Heidinger and Pavolonis gave oral presentations on satellite-based cloud remote sensing research being conducted at NOAA/NESDIS/STAR. One of the main goals of the SAAWSO project is to conduct field campaigns where detailed measurements of low cloud properties are collected. NOAA/NESDIS/STAR scientists will utilize these measurements to help validate cloud remote sensing algorithms developed for the next generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) and the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS). Additional information on the workshop, including workshop presentations, is available at http://saawsoproject.com/. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov, A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

JPSS Risk Reduction Cloud CDR: The Cloud Algorithm Leads for the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Risk Reduction project "Uniform Multi-Sensor Algorithms for Consistent Products" held a critical design review (CDR) 24 April 2013. Cloud mask, cloud phase, cloud height and nighttime cloud properties were presented. The CDR for the daytime cloud property algorithm will occur next week. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov, M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, mpav@ssec.wisc.edu, Pat Heck, CIMSS, 608-262-7889, pat.heck@ssec.wisc.edu)

ISCCP at 30 Presentation: A. Heidinger and his group gave an oral presentation at this week's "ISCCP at 30" conference which celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP). The talk described the benefits of including the 6.7 micron water vapor channel into the ISCCP processing, which currently only uses the 0.65 and 11 micron observations. The talk tried to motivate the generation of a new ISCCP data set that would be based only on the 6.7 and 11 micron observations. This data would provide more diurnally consistent and accurate height assignments and cloud detection than the current ISCCP data. The presentation was given by Mike Foster since NOAA travel restrictions prevented A. Heidinger from attending. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov, M. Foster, CIMSS, mike.foster@ssec.wisc.edu, A. Walther, CIMSS, andi.walther@ssec.wisc.edu)

VISITORS:

Visitor to CIMSS Tropical Group: Jason Dunion (Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science) visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) to work on collaborative tropical cyclone research projects. He also presented a seminar on a new objective tropical cyclone genesis method being developed. Preliminary experiments are promising. The CIMSS tropical research group plans to collaborate with Dunion on this topic. (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)
