VIIRS Snow and Ice Product Beta Maturity Status: The Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Algorithm Engineering Review Board (AERB) approved the "beta" maturity status of Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) snow and ice products at their May 1, 2013 meeting. The Cryosphere Team gave a summary of the extensive background materials that had been prepared for, and reviewed by, the AERB declaring the beta maturity status. Beta products can be distributed by NOAA's Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS). (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

Critical Design Review for NOAA AMSR2 Products: A critical design review (CDR) for the GCOM-W1 (Global Change Observation Mission) AMSR2 (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2) Algorithm Software Processor (GAASP) was held May 1, 2013. The Cryosphere Team presented snow and ice products. Ocean, precipitation, and land products were also presented. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

JPSS Risk Reduction Volcanic Ash CDR: A Critical design Review (CDR) for the volcanic ash component of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Risk Reduction project "Uniform Multi-Sensor Algorithms for Consistent Products" was held on April 30, 2013. CIMSS/SSEC Imagery at NOAA College Park: The Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) media team, along with Gary Wade, selects, reformats, and sends images and animations, with branding and captioning, for display on lobby monitors in the NOAA building at College Park. Community Volunteer Award nominee: Tom Whittaker (CIMSS) was recognized as one of 98 nominees for a Community Volunteer Award at the annual United Way of Dane County Awards Luncheon, where ten individuals from the community were given awards for their volunteer services during this past year. He volunteers as a math tutor at a local high school. (T. Whittaker, CIMSS, 608-262-2759)

35th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment: Yinghui Liu and Xuanji Wang, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), attended the 35th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment hosted by Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 22-26 April 2013. The theme of this symposium was "Earth Observation and Globala Environmental Change - 50 Years of Remote Sensing: Progress and Prospects". Liu gave a presentation titled "Impacts of Arctic Sea Ice changes on Cloud, Temperature, and Precipitation from Satellite Observations", and Wang presented "Remote Sensing of Polar climate and Its Recent Changes from Satellite".
