ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JUNE 15, 2013

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

VIIRS Cloud Product Beta Maturity Status: The Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Algorithm Engineering Review Board (AERB) approved the "beta" maturity status of Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) cloud products at their June 12, 2013 meeting. The Cloud Team gave a summary of the validation status and other materials that had been prepared for, and reviewed by, the AERB declaring the beta maturity status. Beta products can be distributed by NOAA's Comprehensive Large Array-Data Stewardship System (CLASS) and are accompanied by a product quality assessment report written by the Cloud Team. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov)

GOES-13 Back in Operations: Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-13 became the operational GOES-East satellite once again at 15:45 UTC on 10 June 2013 (following recovery from an anomaly on 22 May when it is thought that the satellite was hit by a micro-meteor). GOES Sounder shortwave noise was reduced via the instrument outgassing, which was done, in part, at the request of Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) researcher T. Schmit. More information can be found at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) satellite blog: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/13220. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958; J. Gerth, CIMSS; J. Nelson, CIMSS, 608-263-6013, jim.nelson@ssec.wisc.edu; M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146, mat.gunshor@ssec.wisc.edu)

All the bands have been remapped into the same projection. These were the first images after GOES-13 once again became the operational east satellite.

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

EUMETSAT Training: Steve Ackerman participated as an instructor in the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) International School on Applications with the Newest Multi-spectral Environment Satellites. He gave lectures on using satellite observations to determine surface and cloud properties, and covered applications of the Suomi-NPP DNB. There were 21 European forecasters participating in the week long school. (S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647)

Special GOES-14 Imager Rapid-scan Imagery: The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-14 Imager was placed into Super Rapid Scan Operations for GOES-R (SRSOR) to monitor the development of severe weather over a rare Storm Prediction Center (SPC) High Risk region on 12 June 2013. In SRSOR mode, images were available at 1-minute intervals (compared to the routine 15 or 30-minute image interval): http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/news/articles/3395. The development of numerous large thunderstorms can be seen on the animations created from GOES-14 SRSOR data. The special data ran until 12 UTC on 14 June 2013. Animations, schedules, and other information can be found at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) satellite blog at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/13256, http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/13264 and http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/srsor2013/GOES-14_SRSOR.html.
