CIMSS Hosts 21st Summer Workshop for Highschoolers: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) held its annual Student Workshop on Atmospheric, Satellite, and Earth Sciences on 23-27 June 2013. CIMSS staff, along with UW Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) faculty and students, other UW researchers, and local community scientists provided a wide perspective on the current state and challenges of interdisciplinary earth science. The twelve students engaged in small group discussions and science activities with working experts. Exercise of satellite data display and analysis programs (such as McIDAS, UW SSEC’s Man-computer Interactive Data Access System) as well as field trips to a local television weather office (WKOW), the local National Weather Service (NWS) office (in Sullivan, WI), the Aldo Leopold Nature Center (in Monona, WI), the UW Washburn Observatory, the UW Geology Museum, and the geological wonders of Devil’s Lake State Park were interspersed with classroom talks, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. Visits to NWS offices in Alaska, Pacific Regions: In an effort to increase awareness for the upcoming capabilities of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series (GOES-R), Jordan Gerth from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) visited the National Weather Service (NWS) offices in Anchorage, Alaska, Fairbanks, Alaska, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Pago Pago, American Samoa, between 17 and 28 June 2013. During the office visits, an effort was made to talk to NWS meteorologists about areas in which weather satellites can help solve current and future forecast problems. The staff of the NWS in Pago Pago was particularly appreciative of the visit, since the Pago Pago office does not have a radar on the island and the primary forecast tool is imagery from geostationary satellites that cover the South Pacific Ocean. CIMSS has engaged NWS offices nationwide since 2006 to expand the use of satellite imagery and products among operational forecasters. (J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

CIMSS's Matthew Lazzara Visits STAR at NCWCP and NSOF: On June 21, 2013, Matthew Lazzara from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) visited STAR at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) and toured the NOAA Satellite Operations Facility (NSOF). The visit was hosted by Lt. Christine Schultz, NOAA Corps, currently on assignment to the Ocean Prediction Center (OPC). Lt. Schultz is the lead end user of the Arctic satellite imagery, a Product System Development and Implementation (PSDI) project with the Office of Systems Development (OSD). While at STAR, Lazzara visited with Jamie Daniels, Operational Products Development Branch (OPDB), with regard to the Low-Earth Orbit/Geostationary Orbit ('LEO/GEO') atmospheric motion vectors (AMV) project. The LEO/GEO AMV project is a related project that stems from a Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Risk Reduction project that demonstrated the capability of deriving AMVs using Arctic/Antarctic satellite composites in a gap region between polar-orbiting AMVs and geostationary AMVs. The tour of the NSOF was hosted by Bonnie Morgan of the Office of Satellite Product Operations (OSPO). (M. Lazzara, AMRC/SSEC-CIMSS, 608-262-0436)
