Satellite Educators Conference: The 26th annual Satellite Educators Conference took place August 2-4 at California State University Los Angelos (CSULA). Margaret Mooney from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) presented two session sharing resources from Wisconsin. Teachers were delighted with weather and climate apples and appreciated knowing about satellite related on-line curriculum but the buzz at break-outs and meals revolved around SatCam and the ability to receive a satellite image related to your observation and also browse records (http://satcam.ssec.wisc.edu/records/) of observations all over the world. At the end of the meeting the Satellite Educators Association voted to hold the conference in Madison in 2014, initiating a rotation between CSULA, CIMSS, and a NOAA venue in the DC area. (M. Mooney, CIMSS/SSEC, 608-265-2123)

Cloud Evaluation Workshop Paper: The latest issue of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS) includes a paper titled "Assessment of Global Cloud Datasets from Satellites: Project and Database Initiated by the GEWEX Radiation Panel". This paper's authors included A. Heidinger (NOAA/STAR) and S. Ackerman, A. Walther and B. Maddux of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). This assessment was done under the auspices of the Global Energy and Water Exchanges Project (GEWEX) Radiation Panel of which A. Heidinger is a member. A. Heidinger and A. Walther contributed the Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x) data and S. Ackerman and B. Maddux contributed the NASA MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Cloud Data. This paper compared 12 different global long-term cloud data sets. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov, S. Ackerman, CIMSS, stevea@ssec.wisc.edu, A. Walther, CIMSS, andi.walther@ssec.wisc.edu, B. Maddux, CIMSS, brentm@ssec.wisc.edu).

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Cross-Track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) Calibration Improvements: In support of NOAA STAR Calibration/Validation efforts and in order to obtain Validated status for Suomi-NPP CrIS Sensor Data Records (SDRs), improved radiometric nonlinearity correction and spectral lineshape correction algorithms and associated calibration coefficients have been assessed and implemented. The changes have been integrated into a new version of the Community Satellite Processing Package (CSPP) and the full CrIS mission record has been reprocessed by the University of Wisconsin Product Evaluation and Test Element (PEATE). The refined algorithm results in subtle yet significant improvement in comparisons with other sensors including VIIRS, AIRS, and IASI, and is expected to be included in operational Interface Data Processing Segment (IDPS) processing starting in January 2014. (D. Tobin, CIMSS/SSEC, 608-265-6281)
