Manuscript on Ocean-based Prelaunch Validation of GOES-R Legacy Atmospheric Profiles Published: A manuscript titled "Integration and Ocean-Based Prelaunch Validation of GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager Legacy Atmospheric Products" published in Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology. This is a collaborative effort between Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), co-authors are Hue Xie, Nicholas R. Nalli, Shanna Sampson, Walter W. Wolf (STAR), Timothy J. Schmit (STAR), Jun Li (CIMSS) et al. (Jun Li, CIMSS, Jun.Li@ssec.wisc.edu, 608-262-3755; Tim Schmit, STAR, Tim.Schmit@ssec.wisc.edu, 608-263-0291)

STAR Product Alerts NWS Forecasters to Volcanic Ash Hazard: In the overnight hours on September 22, 2013 very strong northwesterly winds re-suspended large amounts of volcanic ash deposited on the ground by the massive 1912 eruption of Katmai Volcano in the Alaska Peninsula. The re-suspended ash is a hazard to aviators and mariners. The automated volcanic cloud alerting system developed by NOAA/NESDIS/STAR, in collaboration with the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), correctly identified the hazard in a timely manner. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Anchorage promptly issued a Volcanic Ash Advisory (VAA), volcanic Significant Meteorological Information (SIGMET) product, and marine weather statement as a result of the automated alert. A post-event analysis showed that the cloud property information contained in the alert was accurate. More information on the event is available on the NWS Alaska Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=565179400202124&set=a.146147645438637.42652.137686999618035&type=1&theater) and CIMSS Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/13992). ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Super Rapid Scans from GOES-14 - A Glimpse of GOES-R: A NESDIS ‘Looking at Earth’ 4-panel graphic highlights the recent Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-14 imager Super Rapid Scan Operations for GOES-R (SRSOR) information. The title is “Super Rapid Scans from GOES-14: A Glimpse of GOES-R”. The panels include animations of the East Coast derecho, fog over Pennsylvania, the California Rim fire and rapid convection over the Midwest. The animations are best viewed in High Definition (HD) mode and are available at http://www.nesdis.noaa.gov/fourbox/09-23-13/. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Guest Lecture at Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies: Brad Pierce presented a guest lecture entitled "Air quality forecasting and data assimilation for NOAA Airborne field missions" to University of Wisconsin-Madison undergraduate students in Environmental Studies, offered by the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)

GOES-R Science Seminar: The latest installment in the virtual Next Generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) science seminar series was held on September 27, 2013. Mike Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS/STAR) gave a talk entitled “The GOES-R Fog and Low Stratus Products: Algorithm Development and Introduction into NWS Operations.” The presentation gave an overview of the GOES-R fog and low stratus products developed by the GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) and described how National Weather Service (NWS) forecasters routinely use the products. Recorded versions of all GOES-R science seminars are available online at http://www.goes-r.gov/users/sci-sem/index.html. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov)
