AOMSUC-4: The fourth Asia-Oceania Meteorological Satellite Users’ Conference (AOMSUC) was held in Melbourne, Australia from 9-11 October 2013. 120 attendees to the conference were hosted by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (AuBOM). Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists gave presentations on behalf of Mitch Goldberg on JPSS (Joint Polar Satellite System) and Allen Huang on CSPP (Community Satellite Processing Package) as well as a paper on Using STG (Space Time Gridding) for Radiance and Cloud Property Evaluation. Items of note include (1) All Asia Oceania satellite operators (China Meteorological Administration (CMA), Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA)) presented impressive plans for enhanced remote sensing capabilities before the end of the decade. Examples include JMA launches Himawari-8 with an ABI-like imager in 2014, CMA launches a geo –hyperspectral sounder in 2015, and KMA launches GOCI (Geo Ocean Color Imager) in 2018. (2) Implicit in the Asia Oceania satellite plans is that all satellites will include ABI-like imagers by the end of the decade. (3) China is considering a shift to the early morning (6AM) orbit for their polar orbiting satellites (the latest FY3C was launched 23 September 2013 making 6 Chinese LEOs still operating). The conference was deemed to have been very successful in promoting the importance of satellite observations and highlighting their utility, advancing satellite remote sensing science by enabling scientist to scientist information exchanges focused on Asia/Oceania, providing a means for satellite operators to interact directly with the user community concerning current and future satellite related activities and plans, and engaging young people entering into the field. (W.P. Menzel, CIMSS, 608-263-4930)

Meeting of the WMO DAOS Working Group: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Data Assimilation and Observing Systems (DAOS Working Group (WG) met on the campus of the University of Maryland following the WMO-sponsored 6th Data Assimilation Symposium. The group meets once per year to discuss topics, issues and progress related to the global observing system and assimilation schemes. WG member C. Velden (CIMSS) reported on the status of the satellite observing system, and recent developments with atmospheric motion vectors (AMVs). The DAOS WG will survive the restructuring of the WMO research programs, and will now fall under the World Weather Research program (WWRP). (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)
