Science on a Sphere (SOS) Collaborations: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) has two new new partnerships: The Space Foundation in Colorado Springs and the National Park Service (NPS) at the Grand Canyon. Patrick Rowley and Margaret Mooney from CIMSS visited both locations in early November when Rowley led educational trainings at NOAA Science on a Sphere (SOS)installations at each site. Attendees included volunteer docents, professional educators and NPS interpreters. Content for the trainings focused on resources from the CIMSS EarthNow blog (http://sphere.ssec.wisc.edu/), a project funded by the NOAA Environmental Literacy Grant program. Lively discussions followed all sessions of both trainings. CIMSS harvested suggestions for the EarthNow project and attendees left energized by their improved SOS skills. (P. Rowley, CIMSS, 608-263-1336, M. Mooney, CIMSS, 608-265-2123)

CIMSS Satellite Products in Support of SuperTyphoon Haiyan: Supertyphoon Haiyan struck the Philippine Islands with winds reported as high as 195mph. Prior to the landfall, intensity estimates from satellites were being heavily relied on and suggesting values only seen a handful of times in recorded history. Real-time output from the objective Advanced Dvorak Technique (ADT) run at the Satellite Analysis Branch (SAB) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) were supportive of these high estimates, which are now also being utilized in post-storm assessments. (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)

Satelie Imagery of Super Typhoon Haiyan: A variety of satellite images of Super Typhoon Haiyan were posted on the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/14311). Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines early in the morning on 08 November 2013 (local time), with estimated maximum sustained winds of 170 knots and gusts to 205 knots - one of the strongest tropical cyclones to make landfall on record. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958, C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168, R. Kohrs, SSEC, 608-362-6312, D. Herndon, CIMSS, 608-262-6741, W. Straka, CIMSS, 608-262-5128)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

VIIRS Snow and Ice Product Provisional Maturity Status: The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) provisional maturity review for most cryosphere products was held November 14, 2013. The Cryosphere Team presented the status of the Sea Ice Characterization environmental data record (EDR), the Sea Ice Concentration intermediate product (IP), and the Snow Cover EDR. A provisional maturity review for the Ice Surface Temperature (IST) EDR was held August 22, 2013. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

Papers included in EUMETSAT Conference Publication: The following three papers summarizing recent efforts in the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) GOES-R NearCasting project have been submitted for inclusion in the upcoming EUMETSAT (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) Conference Report: Petersen, R. A., W. Line, R. Aune, W. Stroka and R. Dworak, "Improving very-short-range forecasts of the pre-convective environment using clear-air SEVIRI products"; Dworak, R. and R. Petersen, "Validation of GOES-Li and AIRS Total Precipitable Water retrievals using ground-based measurements"; Line, W. E., R. Petersen and R. Aune, "Improving the Depiction of Moisture Transport in Short-Range Forecasts of the Pre-Convective Environment".  The EUMETSAT conference was held in Vienna, Austria, September 2013.  (R.
