ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 23, 2013

IN THE PRESS:

Media Requests Following Super Typhoon Haiyan: In the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan's landfall in the Philippines, Jim Kossin (National Climatic Data Center at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies) has been working with the media to answer questions about Haiyan's strength and connections between extreme events and climate change. His remarks have appeared in the NY Times (and numerous other newspapers through interviews with AP reporter Seth Borenstein), and National Geographic Magazine. He has provided information for live television panel discussions at CNN International and "The National", which is the flagship evening news broadcast from the Canadian Broadcast Corp. He has also provided information for Mother Jones, The Climate Desk, and NPR's Science Friday. He was a guest on NPR's Kathleen Dunn Show and has been invited to be interviewed for a Discovery Channel documentary. (J. Kossin, NCDC/RSAD, 608-265-5356)

Teleconference Presentation to Antarctic Distinguished Visitors: On Tuesday evening November 19, 2013 (Wednesday afternoon at McMurdo Station), Dr. Matthew Lazzara participated in a presentation via teleconference to four Antarctic Distinguished Visitors who are visiting McMurdo Station, Antarctica. They include Dr. Thomas Burns, Deputy Assistant Administrator for Systems NOAA/NESDIS; Mr. Gregory Williams, Deputy Associate Administratory for Policy and Plans for NASA/Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate; Mr. Ernst Koenemann, Director of Programme Preparation and Development Department for European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT); and Dr. Julia Jester, Group Leader, Congressional Affairs for the Office of Legislative and Public Affairs at the National Science Foundation (NSF): escorted by Mr. Patrick Smith of Geosciences Directorate, Division of Polar Programs at NSF. Dr. Lazzara's portion of the presentation discussed the satellite composite Atmospheric Motion Vectors (AMVs) or LEO/GEO winds along with the satellite composite work and the Antarctic Automatic Weather Station (AWS) network and now important each of these efforts has been to not only Antarctica, but the broader world. Specific satellite and meteorological problems were also discussed as well as a review of operational forecasting for the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). (M. Lazzara, CIMSS/AMRC, 608-262-0436)

CIMSS Scientist Visits EUMETSAT: David Santek (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS) was invited to visit the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) in Darmstadt, Germany from 4-15 November 2013. The purpose of the trip was to investigate differences observed in polar satellite Atmospheric Motion Vectors (AMV) between the EUMETSAT and CIMSS algorithms. This was discussed with Regis Borde, Joerg Schulz, and their respective teams. Also, the EUMETSAT winds teams expressed interest in the CIMSS Leo/Geo winds product, as an additional dataset for comparison of high-latitude AMVs from Metop and Meteosat Second Generation (MSG). (D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410)

Presentation on NearCast Given to the NWS and Others: T. Schmit (Advanced Satellite Products Branch) and William Line (Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies, CIMMS) gave a presentation titled "Discussion on the Status of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) NearCast Products in the GOES-R Proving Grounds" to the National Weather Service (NWS) and others. Inputs for the presentation were provided by R. Petersen, R. Aune and J. Li. The bottom line is that the NearCast product will use a baseline GOES-R product and when using the current sounder the NearCast product shows promise filling in observational voids. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)
