World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Meetings and Workshops: During the week of November 17, 2013 M. Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS/STAR) participated in the first meeting of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Sustained, Co-Ordinated Processing of Environmental Satellite Data for Nowcasting (SCOPE-NWC) working group, the fourth meeting of the WMO Volcanic Ash Science Advisory Group (VASAG), and the second WMO workshop on ash dispersal forecasting and civil aviation. All meetings were held at WMO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland from November 18 – 22, 2013. The aim of the SCOPE-NWC initiative is to ensure continuous and sustained provision of consistent, well-characterized satellite products for operational nowcasting and severe weather risk reduction. M. Pavolonis serves as the sole NOAA representative on the SCOPE-NWC and is leading the development of the volcanic cloud nowcasting pilot project. The WMO VASAG is charged with overseeing the transfer of science-based observing and forecasting systems into the routine operations of the International Airway Volcano Watch (IAVW). The IAVW establishes the guidelines under which Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers (VAACs) and Meteorological Watch Offices (MWO’s) operate with regard to volcanic ash related aviation hazards. M. Pavolonis is the only NOAA representative on the VASAG and he will serve as the liaison between the VASAG and SCOPE-NWC, ensuring that the efforts of the two groups are complimentary. Finally, M. Pavolonis gave an invited talk on NOAA’s volcanic cloud remote sensing efforts at the second WMO workshop on ash dispersal forecasting and civil aviation. One goal of the workshop was to organize an international ash dispersion model inter-comparison. The NOAA/NESDIS/STAR volcanic ash products will be used to help benchmark model performance during the inter-comparison exercise. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov)
