GOES-R Content for Science On a Sphere (SOS): A new 90 second video for NOAA Science On a Sphere (SOS) demonstrating capabilities of the upcoming GOES-R satellite (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) was released and distributed in December 2014. “GOES R – A glimpse into the future of Weather Satellites” features a June 2013 case study of 1 minute imagery from the GOES 14 satellite and the improved temporal resolution of the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) scheduled to fly on the GOES-R satellite series. This is followed by a simulation of Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) data using the same case study. More information and a link to a YouTube video can be found on the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) EarthNow Blog at http://sphere.ssec.wisc.edu/goes-r/. The content will be featured on spherical display systems at the 2015 American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting at both the University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering (SSEC) booth and the NOAA booth in the AMS exhibit hall. Visitors to AMS WeatherFest can also request to view the new content at the CIMSS/SSEC exploration station. (M. Mooney, CIMSS, 608-265-2123, Rick Kohrs, SSEC, 608-263-6312, T. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

CIMSS Satellite Blog Post on AirAsia Flight 8501 Crash: A post titled "Did weather play a role in the disappearance of AirAsia Flight 8501?" was added to the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/17443). Satellite imagery showed that the aircraft likely encountered strong thunderstorms, which may have been a factor in its crash into the Java Sea on December 27, 2014. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958).
