Paper Published on Climate Extremes and Air and Water Quality: An invited paper was published in the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association. The paper discusses climate and weather extremes relevant to air and water quality. Jim Kossin (NESDIS/NCDC) served as co-author and provided a discussion of the impacts of pollution aerosols on tropical cyclones. The citation is: Peterson, Thomas C., Thomas R. Karl, James P. ASPB, CIMSS and SSEC at the AMS Annual Meeting: Representatives from the Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB), Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), and Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) participated in the 94th Annual American Meteorological Society (AMS) meeting held the week of February 3, 2014 in Atlanta, GA. There were approximately 50 presentations (combining orals and posters) as part of the Student Conference, Conference on Probability and Statistics in the Atmospheric Sciences, Conference on Environmental Information Processing Technologies, Conference on Weather Analysis and Forecasting / Numerical Weather Prediction, Symposium on Education, Conference on Transition of Research to Operations, Symposium on Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions, Conference on Integrated Observing and Assimilation Systems for the Atmosphere, Oceans, and Land Surface, Symposium on New Generation Operational Environmental Satellite Systems, and the Donald R. Johnson Symposium. T. Schmit presented on “Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-14 Super Rapid Scan Operations to Prepare for GOES-R” and was a co-chair of the Symposium on New Generation Operational Environmental Satellite Systems. International Assessment Report Launched: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Working Group I, Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), was launched on Thursday 30 January. Jim Kossin (NESDIS/NCDC) served as a Lead Author on Chapter 14 "Climate Phenomena and their Relevance for Future Regional Climate Change" and as a Contributing Author on Chapter 2 "Observations : Atmosphere and Surface" and Chapter 10 "Detection and Attribution of Climate Change: from Global to Regional".
