Detecting Cold Air Aloft over the Arctic: A potential application of hyperspectral sounder retrievals (e.g. from the Cross-Track Infrared Sounder) in the detection of very cold air over the Arctic was discussed in a telecon on 14 February 2014. Participants were Kristine Nelson (Central Weather Service Unit, Anchorage, AK), Eric Stevens and Scott Macfarlane (Geographic Information Network of Alaska, University of Alaska, Fairbanks, AK), Elisabeth Weisz and Nadia Smith (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS). Extremely low air temperatures (less than -60 degrees Celsius) cause the fuel of commercial airlines on transpolar flights to gelify. Currently only a few in-situ measurements and model profiles are available to detect this cold air layer and provide its location and extent to the pilots in a timely manner. The feasibility and the anticipated benefits of adding hyperspectral temperature retrievals to current cold air detection and forecasting capabilities will be investigated in the coming months.
