PATMOS-x AVHRR Data Set Released by NCDC: The National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) released the Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x) AVHRR Climate Data Records (CDR) this week. The record of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) spans from 1978 to 2013 and continues to grow. The PATMOS-x data includes calibrated observations of the AVHRR and many cloud climate records. The NCDC announcement is at http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/news/new-cloud-properties-climate-data-record. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2,608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov, Mike Foster, CIMSS, 608-261-1631, Mike Hiley, CIMSS, 608-890-1984)

Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Meeting July 8-11: In keeping with a well-established collaborative partnership between the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) organization, Margaret Mooney and Kyle Nelson from CIMSS attended and participated in the ESIP meeting July 8-11, 2014, in Frisco, CO. Mooney was invited to speak on a panel exploring the access and use of Earth science data where she presented both the WxSat and SatCam apps. Mooney also organized a webinar entitled “Climate Education Resources from NOAA, NASA & CIMSS” in which she co-presented with Frank Niepold from NOAA’s Climate Program Office and Dana Haine from UNC-Chapel Hill Institute for the Environment. (http://commons.esipfed.org/node/2475). Meanwhile, Nelson worked the conference as an ESIP graduate student fellow. On the last day of the gathering, Nelson entered and won an event called FUNding Friday, where ESIP members vote to fund innovative projects. One of two funded projects, Nelson proposed building upon the success of the WxSat app by adding an educational component and selectable color enhancements for global water vapor and infrared imagery viewable with the WxSat app. (M. Mooney, CIMSS, 608-265-2123)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Presentation on the Simulated GOES-R Datasets at a Peer Review: A presentation was given as part of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Ground Segment (GS) Test Dataset Peer Review. The topic was the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) Algorithm Working Group (AWG)/University of Wisconsin (UW) Data Set (AAWDS). These near real time datasets are unique in that they are all the ABI bands, from both a East and West view and include aerosols. The datasets will be used for system level testing, including flowing to Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) II. (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov; T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Wildfires in Canada Producing Pyrocumulonimbus Clouds: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) PyroCb Blog (http://pyrocb.ssec.wisc.edu/archives/370) was updated with a post on wildfires in northwestern Canada that produced pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) clouds on July 14, 2014. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)

CIMSS VISIT activities: S. Lindstrom and S. Bachmeier participated in the Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) Satellite Chat (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/training/visit/satellite_chat/) sessions July 16, 2014. In addition, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/) was updated with a post on Super Typhoon Rammusun making landfall in southern China.
