CIMSS Tropical Cyclone Group Receives AMS Award: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Tropical Cyclone (TC) Group was chosen to receive an American Meteorological Society (AMS) Special Award. The citation reads: “For providing the weather community with valuable tropical cyclone-related satellite information and derived products for over two decades”. The members of the CIMSS TC Group are Chris Velden, Tim Olander, Jason Dunion, Derrick Herndon, Tony Wimmers, Dave Stettner, Sarah Griffin, Steve Wansong and John Sears. (S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647; C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)

Aura Science Team Meeting and CrIS Atmos. Chemistry Workshop: Brad Pierce attended the Aura Science team meeting in College Park, MD on September 15-18, 2014 and presented a talk entitled “Aura Chemical Reanalysis in support of Air Quality Applications”. Following the Aura Science Team meeting he attended the Cross-track Infrared Sounder CrIS Atmospheric Chemistry Users workshop on September 18-19, 2014 and presented a talk entitled “Chemical Reanalysis in support of Air Quality Applications”. Both of these talks focused on how the use of NASA Aura and eventually NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) trace gas retrievals within this re-analysis can serve as a “proof of concept” for future global operational trace gas and aerosol data assimilation and forecasting at NOAA by following path pursued by the European Union within the Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate - Interim Implementation (MACC-III) program (http://www.copernicus-atmosphere.eu/services/aqac/). Figure caption: Comparison of the Real-time Air Quality Modeling System (RAQMS) ozone with CrIS retrievals from the University of Wisconsin Hyper-Spectral (UWHS) retrieval shows that CrIS Mean July 2014 ozone is highly correlated (0.95) and has low biases with respect to RAQMS ozone analyses at 150mb.

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Report Submitted to the WMO's Eighth International Workshop on Tropical Cyclones: A manuscript, "Objective Structure Analysis", by John Knaff (NOAA), Michael Bell (Univ. Hawaii), Johnny C. L. Chan (City Univ. Hong Kong), Kelvin T. F. Chan (City Univ. Hong Kong), Hung-Chi Kuo (Nat. Taiwan Univ.), Cheng-Shang Lee (Nat. Taiwan Univ), Wen-Chau Lee (NCAR), Christopher M. Rozoff (CIMSS/Univ. Wisconsin), Kim Wood (Univ. Arizona), and Buck Sampson (NRL), was submitted for a special report of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)'s Eighth International Workshop on Tropical Cyclones to be held at Jeju Island, Republic of Korea in December 2014. The report overviews recent research on the diagnosis and prediction of the tropical cyclone wind structure. In this report, CIMSS contributed a review of recent research on the use of passive microwave imagery in diagnosing tropical cyclone structure. (C. Rozoff, CIMSS, 608-512-5099).

Guest Lecture at UW-Madison Environmental Studies Program: Brad Pierce presented a guest lecture entitled "Development of National Air Quality Forecasting Capabilities: Combining models, satellite, and insitu measurements during Airborne field missions" to the students attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison Environmental Studies Program Introduction to Air Quality (ES401) class on September 25, 2014.
