WMO Polar Space Task Group Meeting: The World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) Polar Space Task Group (PSTG) held its fourth meeting at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, September 29-30, 2014. Jeff Key attended as PSTG Vice-Chair and one of two NOAA representatives. The PSTG was established for the purpose of space agency planning, processing, and archiving of satellite products covering, or relevant to, the polar regions. All major space agencies have representatives on the PSTG. Key reported on NOAA’s current work on both cryosphere and atmosphere products from the NPP satellite, and gave a presentation on the Global Cryosphere Watch and how PSTG members can influence the development of GCW’s surface based network by requesting sites at locations and with capabilities that benefit the validation of satellite products. Pablo Clemente-Colón, the other NOAA representative, presented relevant activities at the National Ice Center. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

CIMSS Regional Model Forecasts Delivered to the NHC: Through joint effort between the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), the CIMSS SDAT (Satellite Data Assimilation for Tropical storm forecasts) products now are delivered in near real-time (NRT) to the Automated Tropical Cyclone Forecast (ATCF) system that the National Hurricane Center (NHC) uses. The processed diagnostic files have been delivered automatically starting in September 2014. The SDAT (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/sdat) project is funded by Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Proving Ground Risk Reduction (PGRR) and GOES-R High Impact Weather (HIW) programs. The goal is to develop a research testbed for improving the utilization of JPSS sounder and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite(GOES)-R (ABI) data in regional Numerical Weather Prediction(NWP) for high impact weather application and forecasting.
