IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Awards Ceremony Attended: Jim Kossin (NCDC/RSAD) attended the NOAA Administrator's Award ceremony in Silver Springs, MD on 4 November as part of a group receiving an award for their contributions to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). Jim had lunch afterwards with Stephen Volz, and asked him how he liked his new position as the Assistant Administrator for Satellite and Information Services, to which Dr. Volz replied, "well, the first 36 hours have been great." (J. Kossin, NCDC/RSAD, 608-265-5356)

JARS Article Published on GOES Imager Co-registration: A Journal of Applied Remote Sensing (JARS) article has been published on the GOES Imager channel-to-channel co-registration algorithm. The authors are: Z. Li, M. Grotenhuis, X. Wu, T. Schmit, C. Schmidt, A. Schreiner, J. Nelson, F. Yu and H. Bysal. The title is "Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite Imager infrared channel-to-channel co-registration characterization algorithm and its implementation in the ground system." The JARS reference is 8(1), 083530 (2014). doi:10.1117/1.JRS.8.083530. The article can be accessed at http://remotesensing.spiedigitallibrary.org/article.aspx?articleid=1934595. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

Participation in the 27th Severe Local Storms Conference: The American Meteorological Society (AMS) 27th Severe Local Storms conference was held in Madison, Wisconsin, the week of November 3, 2014. The conference highlighted ongoing research using satellite observations to augment other methods of severe weather prediction, including a session focused on GOES-R and its capabilities. Many scientists from the STAR Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) participated. ASPB and CIMSS presentations and posters included using a blog to tell short, compelling stories based on satellite observations (S. Lindstrom and S. Bachmeier); GOES-14 Imager 1-Minute Rapid Scan Data (T. Schmit); supporting Global Hawk hurricane missions with satellite products (S. Griffin and C. Velden); flood spatiotemporal decision-making and community response actions (S. Hubbard); exploiting satellite data to increase lead-time of severe weather warnings (M. Pavolonis, J. Cintineo, and J. Sieglaff); and an analysis of convective clouds viewed from GOES during DC3 (A. Heidinger). More information, including the program, is available at  to http://www.ametsoc.org/Meet/fainst/201427sls.html. (J. Phillips, SSEC; T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291; J. Key, E/RA2)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Telecom to the COPC on GOES Rapid Scans: On November 5, 2014 T. Schmit gave a presentation on GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) Rapid Scans. This included both current GOES Rapid Scan Operations (RSO) and the Super Rapid Scan Operations for GOES-R (SRSOR) from the Imager on GOES-14. The SRSOR portion included overviews of the data collected in 2012, 2013 and 2014, as well as plans for spring and summer of 2015. The presentation was at the request of the Committee for the Operational Processing Centers (COPC), which is under the Federal Coordinator for Meteorology. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)
