IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Visit to Taiwan Central Weather Bureau: A. Heidinger visited in the Meteorological Satellite Center of Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau (CWB). He gave several lectures on cloud remote sensing and radiative transfer modeling. The CWB is a user of the Community Satellite Processing Package (CSPP) and uses the NESDIS Clouds from AVHRR Extended (CLAVR-x) component of CSPP to process data from the imagers on the low earth orbiting satellites. With the help of Steve Wanzong and Nick Bearson of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), he was able to satisfy the CWB requests to update CSPP/CLAVR-x to include more products and to process the Japanese and Korean geostationary imager data. AMT Article Published on AIRS/IASI/CrIS Temperature Retrieval Assessment using GPS RO: An Atmospheric Measurement Techniques (AMT) journal article has been published on the application of GPS RO to the assessment of advanced sounder temperature retrievals from polar orbiting satellites. The authors are: M. Feltz, R. Knuteson, S. Ackerman, and H. Revercomb. The title is "Application of GPS radio occultation to the assessment of temperature profile retrievals from microwave and infrared sounders". The AMT reference is Atmos. Meas. Tech., 7, 3751-3762, doi:10.5194/amt-7-3751-2014, 2014. A link to the publication is available at http://www.atmos-meas-tech.net/7/3751/2014/amt-7-3751-2014.html. (R. Knuteson, SSEC, 608-263-7974)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Article Highlighted: The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society paper, “Validating atmospheric reanalysis data using tropical cyclones as thermometers”, by Jim Kossin (NCDC/RSAD), appears as a Research Highlight in Nature, volume 515, page 167 (13 November). It also appears as a Highlighted Article in the 10 November NOAA Scientific Publications Report. (J. Kossin, NCDC/RSAD, 608-265-5356)

Cloud Products Test Readiness Review: The JPSS Risk Reduction Cloud Unit Test Readiness Review (UTRR) was held on November 12, 2014. The readiness of cloud phase, cloud height, and cloud microphysical properties for operational implementation within the NPP Data Exploitation (NDE) framework was presented. The UTRR for the cloud mask was completed on an earlier date. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov, M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov, A. Walther, CIMSS, P. Heck, CIMSS, Y. Li, CIMSS)

Paper Accepted: The paper "Cluster analysis of downscaled and explicitly simulated North Atlantic tropical cyclone tracks" has been accepted in the Journal of Climate. The article will be part of a Special Issue dedicated to the U.S. CLIVAR Working Group on Hurricanes, which Jim Kossin (NCDC/RSAD) is a member of. Anne Sophie Daloz (SSEC), a postdoc working with Kossin, is the lead author. (J.Kossin, NCDC/RSAD, 608-265-5356)
