ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JANUARY 16, 2015

IN THE PRESS:

SSEC Satellite Images on NBC Nightly News: The NBC Nightly News featured two images produced at the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) in the past week. The first, an SSEC RealEarth™, Suomi NPP image of snow over the Great Lakes region, was featured on January 9. The second, also captured using RealEarth™, aired on January 14. The infrared image demonstrated this week's strong storm approaching Europe and the unusually strong trans-Atlantic jet stream winds. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

CIMSS, ASPB, and SSEC Participation at the 2015 AMS Annual Meeting: Representatives from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), and the NOAA Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) participated in the 95th Annual American Meteorological Society (AMS) meeting held the week of January 5th, 2015 in Phoenix, AZ. There were over 50 presentations (combining orals and posters) as part of the Student Conference, Conference on Aviation, Range, and Aerospace Meteorology, Conference on Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography, Conference on Integrated Observing and Assimilation Systems for the Atmosphere, Oceans, and Land Surface, Conference on Climate Variabilityand Change, Symposium on Education, Symposium on New Generation Operational Environmental Satellite Systems, Symposium on Advances in Modeling and Analysis using Python, Symposium on Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions, Conference on Transition of Research to Operations, Symposium on High Performance Computing for Weather, Water, and Climate, Conference on Hydrology, and Symposium on LiDAR Atmospheric Applications. Many participated in side meetings on a host of topics. SSEC also was present at an AMS exhibit booth highlighting a replica of Vern Suomi’s original meteorological satellite instrument. More information is at https://ams.confex.com/ams/95Annual/webprogram/start.html. Selected ‘one-page’ summaries of presentations will be posted at http://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/star/meetings.php. VISITORS:

Korean Visitors to ASPB/CIMSS Cloud Team: Scientists from the Ewha Women's University in Seoul, Korea visited the Cloud Remote Sensing Team at the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB). Led by Professor Choi, the Koreans presented their plans for generating cloud products from Korea's next geostationary imager which is similar to the GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). The NOAA and CIMSS scientists provided their guidance on the Korean plans and gave a status report on the NOAA efforts. Professor Choi plans on sending students to visit CIMSS in the summer of 2015 and will invite NOAA and CIMSS scientists to visit his group in Seoul. (A.
