Jun Li Wins 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research: Congratulations to Dr. Jun Li for winning the University of Wisconsin-Madison 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research: Independent Investigator. This is a special award, with very heavy competition from all of the research groups on campus. Among the nine Academic Staff Excellence Awards given each year to recognize exceptional individuals and their contributions to the University, only one is for Research by an independent investigator. Jun now joins the elite group of three other investigators from the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) who have received this honor, including Ed Eloranta in 1996, Larry Sromovsky in 2007, and Chris Velden in 2012. Jun and the other recipients of Academic Staff Awards will be honored at a reception on Tuesday, April 7 at the Fluno Center. (H. Revercomb, SSEC; J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

Article published in Weather and Forecasting: An article entitled "Hurricane wind-pressure relationship and eyewall replacement cycles", by James Kossin, was published this week in Weather and Forecasting. The article shows how the relationship between minimum central pressure and maximum wind in a hurricane varies during eyewall replacement cycles, and provides a new statistical relationship that can be used operationally or in postmortem damage analyses. (J. Kossin, NOAA/NCEI, 608-265-5356)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Editorship Accepted: Jim Kossin has begun an editorship for the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society's Annual Supplement on Explaining Extreme Events. (J. Kossin, NOAA/NCEI, 608-265-5356)

VISITORS:

NWS-GRB/CIMSS Visit for Future Collaborations: Richard Mamrosh of the National Weather Service in Green Bay, WI, paid a visit to CIMSS on 4 Mar 2015 to discuss the possibility of collaborations utilizing CIMSS expertise in AWIPS 2 development, data assimilation, and past aircraft data processing experience. The task would be to enhance forecaster awareness on the importance of aircraft atmospheric profile data and the ability of its use in routine operations via model assimilation or as a standalone product. In addition, and most important, the collaboration effort would focus on revamping the way forecasters can visualize the aircraft profiles within AWIPS II with a more convenient AWIPS II application that would be developed in house at CIMSS. (L. Cronce, CIMSS, 608-265-6282)
