ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Invited seminar to Exelis on the Uses of the ABI: T. Schmit gave an invited seminar at Exelis in Fort Wayne, Indiana on March 26, 2015. It was at this facility that many satellite instruments were built, including High-resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS), Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), all the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Imagers and GOES Sounders as well as several advanced imagers. This presentation included information on past, present and future geostationary instruments, although the focus was on the many improvements and uses of Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on the GOES-R series. The presentation, and the many animations, is available on request. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

Participation in the CI Director's Meeting: Steve Ackerman, Wayne Feltz, Wenhua Wu and Soniya Patel attended the Cooperative Institute Directors and Administration meeting on March 24-25, 2015 at the NOAA Silver Spring facility. This is an opportunity for the cooperative institutes and NOAA personnel to discuss what is going well and what needs to be improved. A summary of the meeting will be forthcoming from the executive committee of that group. Steve and Wayne also met with STAR managers and scientists to discuss topics that are relevant to the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and STAR. (S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647; W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Arctic Composite Satellite Imagery Project Presentation at NCWCP: A presentation on the Arctic Satellite Composite Imagery project was given at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction on Thursday afternoon March 19, 2015. This presentation reviewed the status of this product system development and implementation (PSDI) effort that is on-going at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison). These satellite composites were first developed as a part of the Antarctic Meteorological Research Center (AMRC), also located at SSEC, UW-Madison, and later an Arctic version was tested over the Arctic, both with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Plans are in place for operational implementation of the Arctic composites and completion of the PSDI by the Fall of 2015. (Matthew Lazzara, CIMSS/SSEC/AMRC, 608-262-0436)

Guest Lecture on Hurricanes and Climate Change: Jim Kossin gave a guest lecture on 24 March on the topic of tropical cyclones and climate change to the class AOS/GEOG/IES 332, "Global Warming - Science and Impacts". (J. Kossin, NOAA/National Centers for Environmental Information, 608-265-5356).

Fatal Severe Weather Outbreak in the Southern Plains: Outbreaks of severe thunderstorms in the Southern Plains of the US on March 25, 2015 were documented on the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/17983, http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/17963). This round of severe weather resulted in the first tornado-related fatality of 2015. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958, S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608-263-4425)

CREST Brown Bag Seminar: Andrew Heidinger gave a CREST Brown Bag Seminar this week. NOAA/NESDIS/STAR runs the Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology Center (CREST) Brown Bag series of seminars to foster the exchange of ideas between CREST and STAR. The seminar given this week was about the 2015 submission by the NOAA STAR Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x) team to the BAMS State of the Climate (SoTC) report. The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS) has published the SoTC since 1994 and its purpose is to compare the climate observations of the past year to the observations over many years. The PATMOS-x team has authored the section on global cloudiness for several years. The seminar described the process undertaken to write the cloudiness chapter and presented this year's findings. The BAMS SoTC should be available in July. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov)
