CIMSS AND ASPB WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING APRIL 10, 2015

IN THE PRESS:

Recovering Historical GOES data: The effort at the Space Science and Engineering Center/Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (SSEC/CIMSS) to recover the historical record of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) data is highlighted in an European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) online article on climate reanalysis. The importance of this recovery is exemplified in dealing with the aging media these GOES data are stored on. The article is available athttp://www.ecmwf.int/en/about/media-centre/news/2015/climate-reanalysis-data-challenge. (D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410; J. Robaidek, SSEC)

Jun Li Receives Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research: On April 7, Dr. Jun Li received the University of Wisconsin - Madison Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research. This was part of the 2015 Academic staff excellence awards. J. Li applies his strong background in both satellite meteorology and Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP). A quote from J. Li exemplifies his service "Our ideas and our work are not to keep, but to share. Sharing will not put us behind, but motivate us to think harder and work harder, so that we can always stay ahead." (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Global Cryosphere Watch Overview Paper Published: A paper that provides an overview of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) program has been published in the journal Arctic. The title is "A Global Cryosphere Watch" with co-authors J. Key, B. Goodison, W. Schöner, Ø. Godøy, M. Ondráš, and Á. Snorrason. (doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.14430/arctic4476). (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

The 2015 AOSS Community Poster Reception: The 2015 Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences (AOSS) Community Poster Reception was held on 7 April 2015 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Union South. The event showcases the innovative science, engineering, educational outreach, and other projects going on in the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences building today. More than 80 posters were on display this year. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

GOES-R Field Campaign Workshop: Members of the Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB), Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), and Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) attended a planning meeting for coordinating ground based and aircraft measurements to support GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) calibration/validation during the GOES-R Post Launch Testing (PLT) period in 2016. Brad Pierce (ASPB) and Wayne Feltz (CIMSS) presented an overview of measurement capabilities of the SSEC Portable Atmospheric Research Center (SPARC) and Dave Tobin and Joe Taylor presented an overview of the Scanning High-resolution Interferometer Sounder (S-HIS)measurement capabilities (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov, W. Feltz, CIMSS, D. Tobin, SSEC, Joe Taylor, SSEC)

CSPP Geo GVAR v1.0 Software Released: The Community Satellite Processing Package for Geostationary Data (CSPP Geo) team released version 1.0 of the GVAR software package. This is the initial release of software that allows Direct Broadcast users to process Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Imager data received via the GOES VARiable (GVAR) data stream. The main functionality included in this release is to process GOES-13 and GOES-15 Imager data, and write out McIDAS AREA files remapped to a common projection. The software and supporting documentation can be downloaded from http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/csppgeo/gvar_v1.0.html. For questions or comments, or for technical support contact csppgeo.issues@ssec.wisc.edu. (G. Martin, SSEC, 608-263-6794)

VISITORS:

Yasuhiko Sumida from JMA Begins One-year Visit: Mr. Yasuhiko Sumida, from the Meteorological Satellite Center of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), recently arrived in Madison to spend one year as a Visiting Scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). He will continue his work one the use of rapid-scan satellite data for studying severe weather. He gave a seminar on April 10, 2015, providing an overview on the next-generation geostationary meteorological satellite Himawari-8 and its visible-infrared radiometer Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI). He also described his research on identifying convective cells using remote sensing. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu; T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)
