GOES-R Short Course: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) played a key role as instructors for a GOES-R short course for broadcasters. These roles included planning, oral presentations on the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), 1-min imagery, the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM), and fire detection. For the hands-on component, several webapps (web applications) were used that were developed at CIMSS, showcasing the spectral, spatial and temporal resolutions (plus Red-Green-Blue composites). The short course was June 9, 2015 in Raleigh, NC. Chris Schmidt gave an invited presented at the American Meteorological Society (AMS) broadcaster's conference, which followed the short course; the talk was entitled "GOES-R: Improved Data to Better Visualize the Earth". (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov, S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, C. Schmidt, CIMSS, 608-262-7973, M. Gunshor, CIMSS,608-263-1146).

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

NWS Training on Severe Weather Prediction Tool: John Cintineo (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS), Justin Sieglaff (CIMSS), and Mike Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS/STAR/ASPB) created and conducted a training session on the NOAA/CIMSS ProbSevere model. The live training session participants consisted of 26 National Weather Service (NWS) Central Region Science Operations Officers (SOO's). The ProbSevere model has been evaluated at the Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) the last two springs, where NWS forecasters have noted on numerous occasions that it has increased their warning confidence and lead-time to initial severe weather hazards. The training session discussed the science behind the model, examples from the HWT, future product development. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov, J. Cintineo, CIMSS, 608-890-0619, J. Sieglaff, 608-265-5357, CIMSS)

CIMSS Presentations at MUG Meetiing: Mathew Gunshor, William Straka III, Joleen Feltz, and Amanda Terborg participated in the annual McIDAS User's Group (MUG) Meeting in Madison, Wisconsin, presenting GOES-R work done at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and Aviation Weather Center (AWC). Presentation topics were: McIDAS-X Applications at the Aviation Weather Center, Using the McIDAS-V Scripting API for Daily Research Tasks, Using McIDAS to Prepare Users for the ABI, and Using McIDAS to perform validation and applications for Himawari and ABI. McIDAS software applications are being widely used as research, education, validation, and operational tools. McIDAS software and associated hardware will be critical for many GOES-R users before and after launch. (M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146, W. Straka III, CIMSS, J. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-263-3434, and A. Terborg, CIMSS @AWC).
