ASPB and CIMSS Support the Proving Ground/User Readiness Meeting: Several Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) and Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists participated in the 2015 NOAA Satellite Proving Ground/User Readiness Meeting that was held in Kansas City during the week of June 15. T. Schmit (with J. Gerth) presented a 90 min session on Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) familiarization, while M. Pavolonis gave presentations on Fog and Low Stratus and ProbSevere. J. Key and A. Heidinger gave (remote) presentations on Sea and Lake Ice Concentration and Cloud Layers, respectively. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Second Annual TOLNet Working Group Meeting: Brad Pierce gave an invited talk entitled “Understanding Background Ozone over the Continental US: A Global Ozone Assimilation Perspective” at the Second Annual Tropospheric Ozone Lidar Network (TOLNet) Working Group Meeting, June 16-18, 2015 Boulder, CO. This study showed that long-term oscillations such as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation can lead to significant variations in tropospheric ozone columns over the Eastern Pacific which can lead to systematic changes in surface ozone over the Western US. Understanding inter annual variations in background tropospheric ozone will become more important as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lowers the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS), which are based on three-year average of the fourth-highest annual maximum daily 8-hour ozone concentration (MDA8) (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)
