Manuscript on Tropospheric Halogen Chemistry Published: A manuscript entitled "Active and Widespread Halogen Chemistry in the Tropical and Subtropical Free Troposphere" by Wang, S-Y., J.A. Schmidt, S. Baidar, S. Coburn, B. Dix, T.K. Koenig, E.C. Apel, D. Bowdalo, T.L. Campos, E. Eloranta, M.J. Evans, J.P. diGangii, M.A. Zondlo, R-S. Gao, J.A. Haggerty, S.R. Hall, R.S. Hornbrook, D.J. Jacob, B. Morley, R.B. Pierce, M. Reeves, P.A. Romashkin, A. ter Schure, and R. Volkamer was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences(PNAS, doi: 10.1073/pnas.1505142112) on June 29, 2015. The manuscript discusses Tropical Ocean tRoposphere Exchange of Reactive halogen species and Oxygenated VOC (TORERO) airborne measurements which show that tropospheric halogen chemistry has a larger capacity to destroy O3 and oxidize atmospheric mercury than previously recognized. Halogen chemistry is effective at removing O3 at altitudes where intercontinental O3 transport occurs. Public health concerns arise from bioaccumulation of the neurotoxin mercury in fish. Results emphasize that bromine chemistry in the free troposphere oxidizes mercury at a faster rate, and makes water-soluble mercury available for scavenging by thunderstorms(R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)

Paper on El Nino's impact on East Asia summer precipitation Published: A paper was published in Climate Dynamics on the direct impact of El Nino on East Asia summer precipitation. The title is “Direct impact of El Niño on East Asian summer precipitation in the observation”. The authors are Na Wen, Zhengyu Liu, and Yinghui Liu. More information is available at http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00382-015-2605-2. (Y. Liu, CIMSS, 608-265-8620)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

GOES-R and CIMSS Climate Digest at NOAA Climate Stewards: Margaret Mooney from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) participated and presented at the NOAA Climate Stewards meeting which took place June 25-27, 2015 in Boulder, Colorado. The meeting rotated between NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) and the Boulder NOAA complex where Mooney presented CIMSS resources (http://sphere.ssec.wisc.edu/may-2015-climate-digest/) on the original NOAA Science On a Sphere exhibit. Mooney also demonstrated new GOES-R resources at NCAR and invited the group to join the GOES-R Education Proving Ground (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/education/goesr/) which is expanding in preparation for the 2016 GOES-R launch.
