Manuscript Assessing the Use of Drought Early Warning Information Published: A manuscript entitled “Facilitating the Use of Drought Early Warning Information through Interactions with Agricultural Stakeholders” by Otkin, et al. was published in the August issue of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. The short note described results from two focus group meetings that were held last year to present the Evaporative Stress Index, which is a drought monitoring index derived from GOES thermal infrared imagery, to agricultural stakeholders in the central U.S., and to better understand how they could use drought early warning information to prepare for flash drought development. Many attendees were excited about potential applications of the drought early warning tools and expressed a strong desire to optimize and refine these tools to match their specific needs. (J. Otkin, CIMSS, 608-265-2476)

11th Annual NOAA/NESDIS CoRP Student Science Symposium: The 11th Annual NOAA/NESDIS CoRP Student Science Symposium was held in at the Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, Hyattsville, Maryland, 16-17 September 2015. Jun Li, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), attended the symposium and gave an invited talk titled "Overview on CIMSS GOES-R/JPSS research and applications". Other CIMSS participants included Tim Wagner, David Loveless (student), Alex Matus (student), and Burcu Kabas (student). (Jun Li, CIMSS, Jun.Li@ssec.wisc.edu, 608-262-3755)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Yinghui Liu visited JPL: Yinghui Liu of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) visited the NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory September 14-15, 2015. Yinghui gave a presentation titled "Using Multiple Satellites to Understand the Interactions Between Arctic Sea Ice and Clouds", and talked with scientists from Earth Science in JPL for potential future collaborations. (Y. Liu, CIMSS, 608-265-8620)

Second SnowPEx Workshop: The 2nd International Satellite Snow Products Intercomparison Workshop was held in Boulder, Colorado, 14-16 September 2015. The objective of the "SnowPEx" project is the intercomparison and validation of hemispheric and global satellite snow products for estimating temporal trends of the seasonal snow cover and assessing their accuracy. In the 1st International Satellite Snow Products Intercomparison Workshop, held at NOAA, Maryland, in July 2014, the community discussed and agreed on methods and protocols for the intercomparison of products and their validation using reference data sets from various environments and surface types around the world. The original snow product intercomparison project was started by the Snow Watch group of the World Meteorological Organization's Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) initiative in 2013. Jeff Key attended the 2nd SnowPEx workshop and spoke on the importance of intercomparison projects to GCW. Additional information is available at http://calvalportal.ceos.org/projects/snowpex/isspi-2nd-workshop. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
