CIMSS AND ASPB WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 20, 2015

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

CIMSS Leads Training Workshops in Guam: Three scientists from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), Jordan Gerth, Scott Lindstrom, and Kathy Strabala, led two two-day workshops on the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) at the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office in Tiyan, Guam, 16-19 November 2015. Most participants were NWS Guam meteorologists, though two were from Micronesia. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. NWS funded the workshops, and development of training materials related to tropical meteorology forecast challenges, to assure "day one" readiness of NWS staff in the western Pacific Basin. (J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942)

WMO WIGOS Space Vision 2040 Workshop: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) held its WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) Space Vision 2040 Workshop in Geneva, Switzerland, November 18-20, 2015. The workshop was a dialogue between space agencies and user communities in weather, climate, water, and was intended to stimulate the development of a long-term vision for space-based observing capabilities. Jeff Key was invited to speak on current capabilities, user needs, and ideas for the future cryosphere satellite observing system. His presentation addressed the needs of the WMO Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) program and the requirements recently compiled by the WMO Polar Space Task Group (PSTG). (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

WMO Polar Regional Climate Center Meeting: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) held the first Polar Regional Climate Center (PRCC) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, November 17-19, 2015. The objective was to facilitate the engagement of the user, research, and operational communities for the development of an implementation strategy for a PRCC. This workshop focused on the Arctic. WMO RCCs are centers of excellence that create regional products, including long-range forecasts, that support regional and national climate activities, and thereby strengthen the capacity of WMO Members in a given region to deliver better climate services to national users. Jeff Key participated (first day only) as a representative of the WMO Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW). Additional information on WMO RCCs is available at http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/wcp/wcasp/documents/RCC_flyer_October2011_en.pdf. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

CIMSS Investigates GOES-R ABI DOE-3 Files: Researchers at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) obtained a subset of the output files from Data Operations Experiment 3 (DOE-3). These simulated Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R data are generated to mimic the future capabilities and test the ground system and product validation tools. CIMSS researchers confirmed that there was a systematic bias in the Cloud and Moisture Imagery Product (CMIP) file reflectance factor values generated for the Visible and Near-Infrared bands. This was done by generating CMIP files at CIMSS using the Level-1b radiance files as input and the conversion coefficients provided in the files by the ground system and then comparing the outputs, the results of which can be found online at http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/grafiir/ABI_DOE/DOE_3/. (M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146, matg@ssec.wisc.edu, K. Bah, CIMSS, W. Straka III, CIMSS, H. Zhang, CIMSS, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

HFIP Annual Meeting: Scientists from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) participated in NOAA's Hurricane Forecast Improvement Program (HFIP) Annual Review meeting, 17-19 November 2015 in Miami, FL. Christopher Rozoff presented results on the probabilistic prediction of tropical cyclone intensity change using an analog ensemble at the "Workshop on Effective Use of Hurricane Ensembles" on 17 November. This workshop has likely led to new NOAA-CIMSS collaborations; namely, a tiger team effort for ensemble model intercomparisons was proposed in meeting discussions, which will include the analog ensemble being developed by investigators at CIMSS and co-investigators at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). (C. Rozoff, CIMSS, 608-263-6733).

Presentation on the ABI to Lockheed Martin: On November 19, 2015, T. Schmit gave a presentation to Lockheed Martin in Littleton, Colorado. The topic of presentation was the many uses of the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) -R series. It is at this facility that the GOES-R and –S spacecraft are being assembled. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)
