Annual meeting of the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration Team: The annual meeting of the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration Team (GLRCT) was held August 2-4 at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, Presque Isle, PA. R. Aune, a team member representing NESDIS, was not able to attend, however, a dial-in was provided that allowed participation. The objectives of the meeting were to strengthen the cohesiveness of the team and improve team effectiveness, increase member knowledge of NOAA Line Offices, programs and regional capabilities, increase member knowledge of and interaction with regional partners in the Great Lakes Region, and determine team direction and projects for 2017. (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071)

DOE-4 Simulated ABI imagery and products in AWIPS: Real-time simulated Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) imagery and products are flowing to the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) routinely over the NOAAPORT Satellite Broadcast Network (SBN). This is part of the Data Operations Exercise (DOE) -4. This week began the simulation of a GOES-R placed at the central or test longitude to better prepare for the initial GOES-R data. (T. Schmit, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov, E/RA2, 608 263-0291; R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov; K. Bah, CIMSS)

Figure caption: The 16 bands of the ABI simulated from the central longitude. The real time ABI radiances are generated by Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and select Level 2 products are generated by the GOES-R Ground System and then sent over NOAAPORT for National Weather Service (NWS) user preparedness. These images are show in the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS)-II and are valid at 18 UTC on August 2, 2016.

VISITORS:

SOOs Visit CIMSS: On 3 August 2016, J. Craven, Scientific Services Division Chief for the National Weather Service (NWS) Central Region, joined by several Science and Operations Officers (SOOs) from the forecast offices serving the Upper Great Lakes, visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). The visitors heard presentations on research from Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) scientists A. Heidinger, M. Pavolonis, and T. Schmit, as well as J. Gerth and C. Pettersen of CIMSS. The SOOs were particularly interested in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series (GOES-R), NWS training plans for GOES-R, and the use of satellite imagery in assessing thunderstorm severity. CIMSS has actively engaged operational users for over a decade, leading to inspired research ideas with immediate pathways to NWS operations. (J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942)
