JPSS 1 Critical Design Review: A Critical Design Review (CDR) was held for the NESDIS product suite from the First Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS-1). Thomas King led the CDR which included information on the requirements, operations concepts and quality assurance. The review also included briefings from 19 different product groupings. Each product briefing discussed the updates planned for JPSS-1, which will be launched next year. Jeff Key presented the summary of the Snow and Ice product groups, Andrew Heidinger presented the Cloud products and Michael Pavolonis presented the Volcanic Ash products. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov; M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, mpav@ssec.wisc.edu; J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

Direct Broadcast Training at the AOMSUC: Personnel from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) participated in satellite meteorology training at the 7th Asia-Oceania/2nd American Meteorology Society (AMS)-Asia/2nd Korean Meteorological Agency (KMA) Meteorological Satellite Conference (AOMSUC) in Incheon, South Korea. Two different sessions on installation, execution and utility of the Community Satellite Processing Package (CSPP) Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geostationary (Geo) software were taught in support of local environmental forecasts. Students included weather forecasters from KMA and a number of surrounding Asian countries. (L. Gumley, CIMSS, 608-265-5358, G. Martin, SSEC, 608-263-6794, K. Strabala, CIMSS, 608-263-8752)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Visiting Scientist Explores the McIDAS-V Scripting API with CIMSS Scientist: Scientist Michaela Valachová visiting from Charles University Department of Atmospheric Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics in Prague, the Czech Republic, met with Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientist Joleen Feltz to learn techniques for loading data via the McIDAS-V scripting application programming interface (API) and other helpful features of the McIDAS-V display package. Michaela is visiting Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) as she works on her doctoral thesis examining the microphysical properties and dynamics of convective storms over Europe using satellite data, the Central European Lightning Detection Network (CELDN) and radar data. Michaela  is a forecaster in the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, Central Forecasting Office. (Joleen Feltz, CIMSS, joleen.feltz@ssec.wisc.edu, 608-263-3434).

Presentations at AOMSUC-7: Seven scientists from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), J. Gerth, L. Gumley, A. Huang, J. Li, G. Martin, K. Strabala, and W. Straka, gave presentations as part of the 7th Asia-Oceania Meteorological Satellite Users’ Conference (AOMSUC) in Incheon, South Korea, from 24 to 27 October 2016. The presentations covered a variety of topics of interest to the weather satellite user community, including data assimilation, satellite data processing, imagery visualization software, and user training. (J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942)

Guest Lecture on Satellites and Air Quality: Brad Pierce gave a guest lecture entitled "Development of National Air Quality Forecasting Capabilities: Combining models, satellite, and insitu measurements during airborne field campaigns" for undergraduate students in the UW-Madison Environmental Studies Program "Introduction to Air Quality" class (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)

CIMSS VISIT Activities: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) lessons "TROWAL Identification" and "GOES-R Fog/Low Stratus Products" were led by S. Lindstrom on October 27 and 28, 2016. The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog was updated with a post discussing a 3-day event of transport of glacial silt/sand off the coast of southern Alaska on October 23-25, 2016 (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/22434).
