Japan's Next Himawari AHI Launched, Rocket Signature Observed: Japan successfully launched the Himawari-9 satellite from the Tanegashima Space Center (near the southern tip of Tanegashima in the Osumi Islands south of Kyushu), a follow-on to Himawari-8, shortly after 3:20 PM local time (0620 UTC) on 2 November 2016. Japan's current Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) was able to observe a signature from the rocket that launched their second AHI. A Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/22519) documents this using visible, near-infrared (IR) and IR bands.(S. Lindstrom, CIMSS; S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958; T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)
