ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 25, 2016

IN THE PRESS:

CIMSS Associate Scientist Leigh Orf featured in documentary: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Associate Scientist Leigh Orf is featured in the documentary "Inside A Supertwister" (http://go.wisc.edu/zbo21v). The documentary was produced by the Advanced Visualization Laboratory at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications as part of the NSF-sponsored CADENS effort. (L. Orf, CIMSS, 608-890-1983)

Two Wisconsin Satellite Geeks on the "Wx Geeks" Show: The topic of The Weather Channel "Wx Geeks" show was Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R, which aired on November 20, 2016. Tim Schmit (@GOESguy on Twitter) was interviewed regarding a wide range of GOES-R topics. Scott Bachmeier, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) was the Geek of the Week, in part due to his contributions to the CIMSS Satellite Blog (and as @CIMSS_Satellite on Twitter; https://twitter.com/WXGeeksTWC/status/800384965649334272). (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)

NOAA Research Picks up SSEC Story on JTTI-funded AERI Research at CIMSS: The NOAA Office Oceanic & Atmospheric Research picked up the Space Science and Engineering Center's (SSEC) story on CIMSS scientist Tim Wagner's proposed research to improve numerical weather prediction model forecasts by incorporating ground-based temperature and moisture profile data from SSEC’s Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI). Wagner's work was selected for funding through NOAA's Joint Technology Transfer Initiative: 1) Scientists test a new tool to improve local precipitation forecasts: http://go.wisc.edu/3of05y, 2) New UW-Madison project funded by NOAA could improve weather forecasting: http://go.wisc.edu/ow2cfb 3) New AERI research at CIMSS to support operational weather forecasters: http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/news/articles/9322. (J. Phillips, SSEC, 608-262-8164, T. Wagner, CIMSS, 608-265-8620)

SSEC Coverage of GOES-R, Pre- and Post-launch: The next generation geostationary weather satellite, GOES-R, successfully launched on November 19, 2016. Space Science and Engineering Center Communications has provided ongoing coverage -- across multiple platforms -- of the NOAA, NASA, CIMSS, SSEC collaborations that aim to strengthen our nation's satellite imaging capabilities: http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/news/topic/goes-r. GOES-R Launch: Members of both the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and STAR Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) attended the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R launch on November 19, 2016 (http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/news/articles/9366). Several participated in the teachers and/or science and/or broadcasters workshops. Topics at the science workshop included post-launch plans, cal/val, and product readiness. More on the broadcasters workshop can be found at http://stormcenter.com/goesr/. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

GOES-R Education Proving Ground Launch Workshop: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) conducted a teacher workshop for educators attending the historic launch of the first R-series Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) November 18 and 19 in Cape Canaveral Florida. 50 teachers registered for the event when it was scheduled for early November but subsequent launch delays resulted in 23 attending, traveling from 10 different states and Puerto Rico. The full agenda is on-line at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/education/goesr/workshop.html. The first day involved professional development off-site culminating in a NOAA mission briefing at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). On launch day, teachers enjoyed exploring KSC before boarding buses to watch the launch from the Saturn V viewing complex. It was the chance of a lifetime, and attendees were enthusiastic about sharing the experience with their students and promoting GOES-R capabilities. CIMSS will continue to work with these teachers, and all educators, to promote the entire GOES-R series. (M. Mooney, CIMSS, (608) 265-2123, T. Schmit, E/RA2, (608) 263-0291, M. Gunshor, CIMSS, (608) 263-1146)
